Default opinions wanted

Our French friend is a web designer & went to see an immigration agent in Sydney in January. He was told that Sydney is the only place he will find work.As it was too expensive to live there with his family he has given up on the idea of moving. He speaks fluent english so what do you think of the agents advice ?We've tried to convince him the agent was wrong & that there are jobs all over Oz which he can earn enough money from to support his family.

Depends how much he and his family spend.

tell him to do research on jobs on

www.seek.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au

then work out a budget he spends a month in france and converty it to dollars and see if the salary matches their lifestyle.

Easy

He would certainly be better aiming for the major cities or outskirts of them, Brisbane is becoming very popular, perhaps the house prices are connected with that. Adelaide too is another alternative.
Sydney is fab great place but seriously houses prices are same as London in parts, apparently over 100 neighbour have a median price of $1 million dollars.
So get a few more opinions from people who work in IT here in Oz.

Surely the migration agent is wrong...or at least exaggerating.

Based on what you said above, according to the migration agent, there are NO web designers to be found in Australia other than Sydney.

I know someone who works for Bigpond here in Brisbane and from what I've heard they have quite a big team. So there is obviously work to be found elsewhere (unless the person I know is working for free...which I extremely doubt!)

I would have thought that, by definition, a web designer can be based anywhere that there's a web connection?

Since when was an immigration agent also an employment agency ?

Tell him to get stuffed in my opinion. Sydney is not the center of the Australian job market by any stretch of the imagination. In my experience many Sydneysiders have rarely even been out of their own city never mind the state and are way too up themselves.
