Default Opening an Australian Bank Account from UK

A couple of people have mentioned that they were able to open their Australian bank accounts over the internet before they actually emigrated. Which banks did you use and was it difficult?

Thanks
Sani

Decembers issue of Australia and New Zealand magaznie came today. There's a page in it about migrants banking before they move.

Try www.westpac.com.au/migrantbanking

We were with HSBC in the UK and so stuck with them, process was relativly painless, went to the branch here in Sydney when we arrived and picked up our cards etc. - no problems.

We opened ours over the net with ANZ. Downloaded forms filled them in and posted them back to Oz. Received letter back within a week with account number etc on. We can't withdraw any money from this account until we verify who we are on arrival in Australia. Hope this little bit of info helps.

HSBC is probably one of the easiest routes as they have branches all over the UK.

Another big plus with them is that if you leave money in your UK account it does not cost you anything to take it out abroad.

We opened a migrant banking account with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
You can download a form online or call their London branch.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia
Senator House, 85, Queen Victoria St, London, EC4V 4HA
Tel: 020 7710 3999

The application is done in about a week and your given a sort code and account number.
I think if you send over less than £30,000 there is a small fee but its waived if you send a higher amount.
You have to validate it at the other end where you will recieve your cards, to take out money.

We did this before our move, got a mortgage and credit card with CBA no probs. We did send a fair bit of money through, profit on house, savings ect, which was good because the bank manager, who we met when we first got here was referee for our first rental house so we didn't need any proof of work ect (not that we had a job).
