You will receive a rebate from medicare for the consultation (if you are able to claim from medicare, this depends on your status in Australia). An eight week check is advised as follow up, and it is wise to have a transvaginal ultrasound to check the position at this time. Not all Gynae Specialists have ultrasound equipment, so not all will offer this at follow up. But follow up is important regardless.
You need a referral from a GP in order to claim a rebate from medicare for the specialist appointments.
So, in view of all this, you might be better to organise it through your UK GP before you come to Australia. But they are offered here so you if you don't find the time before you leave, don't worry, as you can easily have it replaced in Australia.
So cost is involved here
1) GP consult for referral to specialist (+- a prescription)
2) Prescription charges
3) Initial specialist consult for prescription, removal of current Mirena and insertion of new one
4) Follow up consult (+- ultrasound)
