One Aussie not homesick?
An Aussies view in UK of Australia?
LAST night I watched a documentary on BBC TV concerning Australia's treatment of refugees, which may not be shown in Australia. The journalist visited the site in central Australia where they were incarcerated, and also actually managed to visit Nauru, posing as a Melbourne housewife, where she was evidently even more convincing than Barry Humphries.
The most shocking footage concerned the treatment of the leaky boats coming from Indonesia, especially one case when the loaded boat sank, killing hundreds of people. The point was made that the Australian authorities were aware of the boat's position, but attempted no rescue.
We saw politicians appearing shifty and evasive; we saw one making capital out of pic tures of children in the water, knowing all the time that what he was saying was a travesty of the facts.
We saw a repulsive disc jockey, who is evidently popular. Australia is a beautiful country, but it has some ugly people. The documentary was a wonderful cure for homesickness.
