Default Oil & Gas jobs - perth

Does anyone know if the job situation in Perth is as bad as the uk? My husband is a structural Autocad draughtsman in the oil and gas industry and we would love to relocate but not sure if there will be any jobs?? Or if his skills in oil and gas would be transferable to any other industry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well the UK unemployment rate is much lower than Australian currently and there is a lot of unemployent in Perth at the moment in these industries.

If you are thinking of migrating versus making a temporary move, I would probably not think too hard about it. The UK and Australia are both first world countries and both will go through cycles of high and low unemployment. As a migrant yOu have to weather the storms or face moving from one country to the other every few years.

The low oil price is hitting the industry world wide not just the UK.

I most definitely would NOT come to Perth right now. The job situation is dire in Oil & Gas. Many designers are out of work, in fact the world wide situation is pretty crap.

Even without the current oil $$$ situation, my understanding that unless is very specialist work for critical sub-sea etc most of the drawing is done in Asia by Asians because its cheaper.

I’m not 100% convinced that’s right in my experience a significant amount of the work is still done on shore

I picture a draftsman as someone with specs, a beard, and a short sleeve shirts, on the wrong side of 50, on a drawing board or at best in front of an Autocad Lite churning out 2D drawings all day.

I picture a modeller as someone with 3 screens, 3D modelling of course, a lot younger, and only ever touching a drawing when the software aint capable of generating it for you.

Plenty design work still done in the west - look at all the major EPCMs in London and the Thames Valley, Houston etc

By the time you've fixed all their f**k ups (not to mention the hit to time-frames), it's no cheaper to get it done on Asia. I have extensive 1st hand experience of this
