Oh to be thin(ner)...
Hi
Sat here pondering New Years Resolutions and all that (as you do at this time of year), mine being to stop drinking so much (already broken that! Too much nice wine here) and to eat more healthily thereby losing weight (may even up the old exercise too!). Wondering if anyone else is doing this and if so, could we all support each other - kind of like a weightwatchers without the fees where we all share tips, weight loss etc (WITHOUT revealing actual weight unless we want to!!!! :scared: ) What do people think? My only tip so far is eat lots of salad - don't know if it's working yet or not but it makes me feel I'm making an effort ...fed up with hubbies comments re rabbit's etc when I put salad on his plate too! My message to him on here is ... 'I know you are not a rabbit!!!!' Hoping to lose more kg than I care think about, so how about it? Shall we share and help the weight losses together...I bet I'm not the only one to be doing this! Kim |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Hi
No, your not the only one, I too decided new year, new diet, new life in Oz and have been doing the Carol Vorderman 28 day detox diet since New Years day - hard work!!! I am now on day 7 and counting down the days till I can have a chinese take away. Alison |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
I too intend to loose all the christmas excess baggage. Only I'm still in UK and hoping to be thin before I hit those Ozzy beaches. I've not decided how to do it yet but last year a bought a little exercise trampoline and lost a fair few pounds by drinking lots of water and just jumping up and down every day so will prob get that out again. I also read something recently, but can't remember where, saying that drinking lots of ice cold water every day speeds up the metabolism. Soming to do with the process your body goes through to warm the water to body temperature.
I'm up for the supporting each other bit. I did weight watchers last year too and lost nearly 2 stone (all back on now though) and I think it was the support aspect that kept me going. That's it, I've decided for definate now, I'm gonna start Monday!!! |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Hiya yes that was one of my new year resolutions too.....new year, new life down under, new healthy lifestyle.....hence new pressure!! oh well i'm sure with support and determination we will all do what ever we aspire to do. Good luck to all those wanting to make changes to their life whatever they may be :D

Alison Hi I done the Carole V diet last year it was hard but well worth it and after a few days you do begin to feel great.....honest :) I`ve started a diet I`m doing slim-fast to give me a kick start, gonna do it for a few weeks and see how I feel then may do another Carol V :scared: Drinking lots of water is ment to help loads. Got to lose some weight before my meds on the 27th Jan  Good luck all Sue :) |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
I second that! Hate diets - just the idea of them; never done one in my entire life. If I was meant to be stick thin fruit and veg would taste good and curries awful; they don't and don't respectively.
Am off to the fridge for another glass of white burgandy and a nibble of Wensleydale while the duck cooks. Yuuuuuummmm. Best of luck to anyone on one though! :) GG

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
My philosophy is - if you feel well then don't worry too much - life is far too short.
I'm probably a bit too thin, and I smoke - but don't give a damn - I feel good. :) Felt s*** last week - good this week!!!!!!!!! Cas |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Hi
Me too! Only want to loose half a stone but its really difficult when your other half keeps opening the red wine and getting takeaways! I try to stick to healthy food in the week, no crisps chocolate or any junk food at all. I eat cereal in the morning, ham salad sandwhich for lunch and maybe chicken & salad and small jacket spud for dinner. I have fruit for snacks and find that I dont get hungry at all. At the weekends I will maybe have a takeaway and a nice chocky bar, that way you dont end up banning foods, you eat in moderation and dont feel fed up because you are depriving yourself. I only loose about 1lb a week but its more likley to stay off then loosing 5lb in a week. Dont go much on the faddy detox stuff or atkins, all are very limiting and you end up falling off the wagon, But obviously some people have better will power than me! Good luck, have to go and order something relativley healthy from the indian!!!! :D Daihla |

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Oh what a good idea.... the only thing is we will have to trust ourselves to weigh in at home and benhonest.
I am trying at the mo but think I will start back on the Slimming World diet as it worked last time befoire I got pregnant with Georgia whos now 1 Drinkin plenty of water not only helps your metabolism but keeps the skin clear, and helps out your kidneys. Keep up the good work folks! Ang |

I eventually lost 35lbs for my medical and am now quite happy at size 14. For the first time in a very long time, I can go into a shop and pick up clothes that I know will fit. I have gained a few pounds over Chrimbo as we went away and the food was excellent, lol. Now back on the road to recovery doing 'You Are What You Eat'. Bought a trampette yesterday so that I can do some exercise whithout going to the gym. Good luck with the weight loss, have also been an avid atkins follower so if you want any support/help just let me know. Best Wishes Sarah |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
I lost 2 ½ stone about 2 years ago, I did it with will power: we all know what we should be eating, so it was a case of trying to stick to that.
If I was good all week I allowed myself a bottle of wine at the weekend. I also swam 3 nights a week and drank a lot of water, especially before I ate. It took me 7 months and I really wouldn't want to do it again!! I have put back on about ¾ stone, because I broke my foot in October and haven't been swimming since, so I've cut out some of the rubbish I'd started eating lately and my wines gone out the window again! Good Luck, it's worth it in the end!!! ;) |

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Hi
Been eating lots of salad and drinking lots of water. Need to really think more about what I eat (and drink - think I should cut down on alcohol too...but Australian wine is so nice and cheap here!! :) ) Just wondering if anyone on here has done the Atkins type diet and did it work...I read somewhere that if you do that then you are changing your eating habits for life and would prefer to eat a balanced diet that is healthy for life (with a few treats along the way!) teach - will check out the thread you mentioned - thanks for that and congratulations on losing so much! Hope I can report something similar on here one day Off to eat more salad - good job the veg here seems to taste nicer! Kim |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
*groan*.......diets.......*groan*................. I managed to stay on my diet for ONE DAY!! last week....good on monday, but tuesday was a washout, and wednesday i just gave up!!!
My ideal weight loss would be 3 and a half stone, but would be happy with a half stone weight loss to get me down to 13 stone! I need a gun to my head to keep to a diet................... good luck to all those who are dieting/contemplating it!!!! sue :D :D :D |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
My mum was a big follower of the Atkins diet and she used to regularly lose a few stone over a period of 1-2 months. I have also tried the Atkins diet and lost around 7-12 pounds within a month but found that I became very depressed and lethargic. I later found out that The Atkins diet has been linked to Depression!!! my mum also suffers from Depression. So now I dont do it. When I want to lose half a stone (I weigh 9 and a half) I drink loads of water, eat loads of fruit and veg and just one small portion of meat a day. I get terrible cravings for sweet stuff though, although normally I dont eat much chocolate or puddings (Must be the thought of dieting which increases cravings). When I get a craving I eat a small tub of Ambrosia low fat rice pudding. I normally lose the weight within 2/3 weeks.

Eric the Viking The detox diet basically is to stop caffeine (tea, coffee & coke), stop eating processed foods, stop diary products and only eat pure foods, oh and a load of supplements (5 different tablets to compensate for what you are not eating). I do feel a lot better, to start with had really bad headaches, but now on day 9 and feel great!! I think this week I will start to see the difference with my waistline, improve my skin and can even help with aches and pains - cleansing the whole body. Very strict diet, but I need that and is only for 28 days. Everyone is supposed to loose between 1-2 stone and that is all I need to loose (11lbs that is). See how I go on!!!! Alison |

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
There wa an 'expat' diet about this time last year.......think it was mcmercer and a couple of others. Dont shoot me if I am wrong.
I desperately need to lose the 2 stone that I put on since I packed up the 40 a day ciggie habit. The weight was getting me down, until my GP advised that it was better to be a bit overweight, than carrying on with the fags. Now, when I know how much my daddy is suffering (lung cancer) I am glad I packed up the fags. A little overweight, but a no-smoker |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Keeping a food diary helps also, it shows what you have been eating and no lying to yourselves. I think if you just change your food to healthy eating no junk etc you feel alot better and no so aware youre dieting. If you crave that chinese get your partner who isnt on a diet to get a small portion and have a couple of spoonfuls at least it helps take the craving away, and if its like my partner he shovels it down so fast that would be all I would get lol. Drinking water before your meal helps also in filling you up so you dont eat so much. In Australia you also get loads of places like at the Malls that sell salad, noodle soup, melon juices, a favourite of mine was watermelon and rockmelon, carrot and celery really refreshing with ice in it. I think it was easier to keep the weight off in Australia than it is in the UK.

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Don't worry too much what you eat.
Get a map out; work out a 5km running route. Get a rucksack and fill it with something heavy. Warm up. Go for a run, and don't jog - run. Work up a sweat. Push a bit hard. Don't be scared!! You will find that over years, your fitness level stays around the same and you will be able to do this over longer distances. If you get a bit out of shape, then do it a bit more often. Your muscle memory will have you back in shape within days. The secret, of course, is not to let yourself get out of shape. I can let myself go for 2 weeks. A few runs and a bit of sweat soon puts it back. That's what I do. And I eat cakes, etc. Cheers Badge |

Alison If you're looking for a shorter version (to kickstart a diet/ get an idea of a detox) I found the Boots own version pretty good. Its just for 5-days, same principles as the above one and really works. I did it last March and felt fantastic for it afterwards. Probably only lost a kilo (but then only had 4-5 to lose) but it was a really good way to get into healthy eating. I still only drink herbal teas, use soy milk on my cereal & no longer add sugar or sweetner to the very rare cup of coffee I have (used to have 4 or 5 a day, now probably 1 or 2 a week!) sounds odd if you don't do it, but is great if you can get used to it. |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
couldn't agree more...
my girlfriend is a qualified medical dietitian and she regularly tells me that exercise is as important as (if not more) to successfully losing weight and keeping it off. i'm aiming to lose 10kg before i next head back to the england (i have 4 months) so i can be the same weight i was when i last was back. football injury and a new girlfriend who likes to be wined and dined helped me put on 10 kilos. but i'm back on it, walking to and from work every day (6km) and a 6km walk at lunch. what she did say about changing the way you eat is that for quick gains then reducing carb intake is great, but should only be used for a few months, then just revert to the obvious: consume less energy (calories/kilojoules) than you burn during the day. a quote from her was: "if you want to do low carb then basically 2 serves of low fat dairy per day, 2 serves of fruit, as much lean protein (ie lean meat, legumes, beans, fish, eggs) as you desire and unlimited veges (bar potato, sweet potato, corn and pumpkin). you have room for about 2-3 serves of CHO though (where 1 serve of CHO is 1 piece bread, 1 med potato, 1/2 cup cooked rice/pasta). but the less CHO the better really go crazy! i had a guy ring me up yesterday to tell me that the low carb diet plan i gave him is working and he's lost about 8kg in the last 6 weeks or so." btw, what are these pounds and stones everyone's talking about ;)

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Megs and Badge have got the sustainable healthy life idea. Diets comes and go and dieters weights are like yo-yos. Healthy living, not an obsession with the scales should be our focus. That requires a permanent change in lifestyle but most want the quick fix. Funny how most detoxxers quickly retox.
Good luck to the ex smoker, the hunger pangs do become easier to deal with in time. |

Good luck to the ex smoker, the hunger pangs do become easier to deal with in time. IMO there's nothing wrong with the occasional detox, depends on why you're doing it. I've done 2*5 day ones and found I've felt a lot better after them (rather than lost weight). If you're relying on them purely to lose weight, then yes, I think you will re-tox :) Just pencilling in my races for this year, came across this one... the ultimate Ultra.... would burn a couple of calories thats for sure :D http://www.goldcoast100.com/GC100/index.html |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Couldn't agree with me old mucker Bondipom more.
Once you are fat, no amount of dieting is really going to work, you have to exercise. When are people going to wake up to this? Eat less fat and carbs, in fact less calories overall. (save enough carbs for the work you do).. As I work in an office, I only eat 2 meals a day. If I exercise, then I may eat a few carbs before, and a bit of protein aferwards. Exercise!! BM |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
The other thing you can do is to put exercise in to your everyday life. In London I would run to the postbox, jeep a pair of joggers and an old pair of shorts handy by the door...I would run to the supermarket, load up with the week's shopping in a big rucksack - no fragile stuff - run back. On the way back, a few laps around the track. Do 50 pressups after shaving, but before you get in the shower..
Then it all becomes fun. When you run to the shops, me a 5k round trip - ask the Missus if she needs anything. If there are any hills around, run up the hill and down a few times as well, do pressups when you get down the bottom. Run in the shade of course. BM |

hmmm. any reason why this order? according to the queer eye guys, you should shave *after* having a shower, apparently it's better for the skin ;)

Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
If running short of time, shave in the shower???
Perhaps whilst do push ups on one arm? :D |
Re: Oh to be thin(ner)...
Its fun when you race past all the club joggers in their fancy gear in your old trainers and rugby shorts that you'v had for 2 years - this is what the missus likes about me - no buggering about:-)
If I push up after shower a) you slip on the wet floor b) you get sweaty again c) ignore the poofters!!! BM |

All the little things isn't it - noone said that marathons had to be run; Park at the back of the carpark when you do shopping (obviously not in the dark corners) Walk up stairs rather than the lift Volunteer to do the coffee run at work & get yourself a fruit juice instead into the bargain too! Do some dips on the couch while watching Neighbours Switch to semi rather than full-fat milk Cut the fat off your bacon Baby steps.... :) |
