The issue is really on what skillset and offerings you will bring to the market and realising that you need to gain "local" creditability. Just do not assume £60K FC roles translate into a senior role over here. The market is full of wantabes in the $80K to $150K range. To earn over the $135K you need to be delivering blood, sweat and tears. Most graduates in London were commanding £48K to £55K (2003) so I think perhaps you were being underpaid. Most of my former colleagues still in London were taking a base of £90+ bonus (usually 30%). My advice would be to contact the agents through Seek.com and follow up with a telephone call to get a realistic feel for your marketability ie your background, qualifications, IT exposure. Dont expect much job hunting help before you come out but start at least with knowing your marketabilty and what skills are in demand. Currently alot of work for SOX if you have that? Kiwi Thank heavens I work in engineering. I can't believe people study for & make a career & put up with this BS. I earn more than this (& did in London too) for much less effort. In engineering, age=experience & is valued. For his own sanity, I hope my son does not choose a career in accounting.:) |

And even then you would have to be on probation and led by the hand. |

I earn enough as it is & would hate the stress. Most engineering/construction projects these days are a nightmare because they are run by accountants who have no concept (or desire to learn) of the practicalities or complications of said projects. This results in costs overruns & delays. In a meeting with contractors recently, accountants were described as 'a condom on the prick of progress'. Sounds about right to me.:) |

And are there accountancy jobs paying this amount? Would prefer Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, if that makes a difference. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Jimbo Its a problem accountants and the like face - many would argue we are overpaid in the UK and in Australia its more equitable. Fair enough, but you need to understand that as a protential emigrant- you wont be rich working for someone else as an accountant in Oz. |

Re: the official jobs/wages thread...
Can see where 'zulu is coming from. My wife often asks me why I'm not in management, management often tell me I should become one of them. I couldn't beleive it when they casually mentioned it.
I tell them both I am happy to sit in the corner and command a 6 figure salary with little stress and overtime. I don't earn 6 figures now but am not exactly stressed and I've learnt so much I've saved money on courses. I couldn't be a manager, I couldn't take it seriously enough. I'm a 'leader', just not a manager. In 8 years I've only met 2 managers who I thought were good managers- coincidentally enough, both Australians in Europe. If IT ever loses it's pay scale I'll just start up as a local tradie, ramping up as quickly as possible. Accountants do seem to get paid less over here. |
