I'm in SA.

We bought an ex-rental which had tenants in at the time. They only had 3 months left on their lease, and were building a house. We were told we would have to take on their tenancy if we settled before the end of their agreement.

We actually settled one month before the end of their agreement, but their house was ready so they wanted to leave early - so in the end it worked out well for all of us.

In Sydney you get to finish out your fixed term at least.

This says WA is the same. http://www.taswa.org/faq.htm#faqsoldhouse

However i've hit an unexpected stumbling block... we are currently renting a very nice house with 6 months on the tenancy agreement remaining (with a view to renewing) and the landlady has very f****** kindly put it on the market for sale without even telling us. Needless to say I can't get to sleep because i'm incredibly ticked off.

So we're now possibly faced with finding another house and moving again...

then I remembered saying a few months ago "There will never be a right time to move to Oz, we will have to make it the right time when we move to Oz", shortly followed by "The opportunity will arise and we will have to take it", we've got a lot of business interest over there and I feel like now is a very good time to go... and I just wondered whether this whole house issue is basically the kick up the back side that tells me to go........

Maybe i'll know what to do when I get some sleep lol, the idea of moving to oz is scary but exciting... I just don't know.

Any life gurus out there ready to help me light my path?

If you do come bring plenty of money and take your time on choosing where to live.

What would it take for you to move? if you had a baby and then you felt responsibilities about getting that child to pre-school age, then maybe something else will happen later. If I were in your situation I'd jump at the chance and just go, you can always come back.

but that's just my opinion

In Australia landlords need to give a certain amount of notice for things like this - can't be bothered to look up the legislation, but you should find out if your landlord has breached anything and if so whack them for everything they have.

What a week... it didn't help because our car looked set for the scrap heap on monday... my dad looked at it and it's fine just leaking water for some reason - but the garage made it sound a lot worse so I was all ready to sign up for the visa on monday!

To be honest we run our own online business, and there looks to be lot of work for us in Oz so that's a good thing for going.... it's still in the back of my mind but I really wanted to go on good terms rather than just giving up and running away.

So i'm probably going to stay put for a couple of years as planned, the business is on its way up and is growing very well - so it makes sense to stay for a little while whilst we secure a good, stable future in Oz before we go. Although we're not sorted with a house yet so I may change my mind yet!

Where's the best place to check for rentals around Melbourne especially at short notice? I've been on realestate but couldn't really see anything that I fancied... probably looking at somewhere rural in between melbourne and the mountains (love snowboarding!)

Thanks everyone for your replies you all made me feel a bit clearer and happier

Jen
