It depends on the skillset of the applicant and the job they are going for.
The best methods are trying the companies direct first, then go for the usual online agencies eg www.careerone.com.au www.seek.com.au (there are more listed on this site). A major agency specialising in recuiting Brits is www.abraxas.com.au .
The problem with the online ads is they are mainly CV (they call them resumes here) harvesters. That is why I say try direct first.
From everything you say I think you should try to get a 6 month lease around Chatswood. I would get temporary accomodation before hand (there have been some recent posts on this) and then look at the properties on offer. 300 a week is a very tight rent budget. I would seriously think of upping that budget by 50 to 100 a week.
Chatswood has all the shops in a couple of large inter linked malls. The beaches are also 20 - 30 minutes drive away.
Public transport is cheap as chips and a weekly that covers most of Sydney is about $44.
Your hospital request makes me think that you are of a nervous disposition. There are plenty of hospitals all around Sydney but lets hope you do not need one.
What sort of entertainment do you want?

Hi I have been a bit busy travelling etc between Auckland and Sydney (or not travelling as in the case of a cancelled plane on Sunday night, but as I was stuck in the Business Lounge with the free bar and nibbles it was not too arduous!
iFriend - try Hornsby for apartments and use this place to start when you come over, I believe it will fit all your requirements to start and then you can have a good look around.
Transport links are good as are shopping and hospitals, primary schools are good in most areas on the North Shore.
As you look at other areas travel down the North Shore Line and there are good areas all around.
Cheers
