Default North Sydney

Dear Sandra,

Thank you for your advice and sorry for my questions are too broad. I don't know too much of Sydney and many many things have not confirmed. At this stage, I still want to get more information about there.

May be I can told you more about my thinking and planing, so you can give me more advise.

1) Working - My hubby and I not yet find a job. Our visa will grant within this month. We hope to find a job before arrive Sydney but it seems difficult (E.g. arrange interview etc). My hubby is working in IT field too. Would you please refer some jobs for him, for details, I can send PM to you if necessary.

2) Landing - Since we not yet find a job, so we think the Sydney central will be much job opportunity. Therefore, we are looking for some suburb are not so far to the Sydney central (travel time within one hour). May be this thinking is wrong.

3) House - We plan to rent a apartment first. The rental fee should be around A$300 (2-bedroom).

4) Car - It depends on the transportation fee and the road (is it always traffic jam, etc....). Therefore, I would like to know some information about transportation (e.g. the fee of trains, petrol fee etc...)

5) School - good school is essential (same as I said last time).

6) Environment/amenties - I hope there is a supermarket is nearby me (15-30 mins walking distant is acceptable). If any emergency, I can go to hospital within 30 mins (Drive). Some facility for children (e.g. park, playing place). Good atmopere and peace.

Since in my country, it is very converience, many shops, supermarkets, entertainment places are very close to us. Therefore, I would like to find the place is not too far and too old, otherwise, I am afraid we are not easy to settle down.

Many thanks.

Jessica

Depending on your income - North Shore has lots to offer a family further up - know as Upper North Shore, look at Gordon, Pymble, St Ives, all expensive but might get some more in terms of rental than the lower North Shore, especially if you rent slightly further afield from walking distance to train station - schools still great if not better. If I remember right you have a six year old ready for primary school, ifriend.

You need to post on here what your specific requirements are, will you drive, what do you want from an area, where you wil work, all the details you provide will allow the current Sydnites to give you more detailed information.

For a fact I know a family living in the hills district who love it for schools and character and amenties etc.

Cheers

Default North Sydney

Hi bondipom,

My budget is A$300 per week. Two bedrooms is OK. I think 70-80m2 is fine for us.

Thanks.

Balmain was a working class suburb for the dockworkers. The area has now gentrified. There are plenty of pubs and cafes there. It is not on a train line but there are plenty of buses going there. Traffic is bad but that is Sydney.

Try www.131500.com.au for a public transport planner.

As suitable as anywhere else in Sydney. It depends where you are driving to.

Are the cost of living of Chatswood & Hornsby being expensive? Which suburb is provide more job opportunity, especially in IT field?
Is the standard(teachers' qualification, environment and facilities) of primary public school is not much different?

Thank you very much.

Chatswood, St Leonards, North Sydney and the CBD are the main IT areas. There is also a cluster of companies around Ryde.

All the above bar Ryde are on the North Shore line.

Is the company accept the oversea applicant? And, is there any website to help people finding a job, e.g. many vacancy ads., etc...

Thanks.

It depends on the skillset of the applicant and the job they are going for.

The best methods are trying the companies direct first, then go for the usual online agencies eg www.careerone.com.au www.seek.com.au (there are more listed on this site). A major agency specialising in recuiting Brits is www.abraxas.com.au .

The problem with the online ads is they are mainly CV (they call them resumes here) harvesters. That is why I say try direct first.

From everything you say I think you should try to get a 6 month lease around Chatswood. I would get temporary accomodation before hand (there have been some recent posts on this) and then look at the properties on offer. 300 a week is a very tight rent budget. I would seriously think of upping that budget by 50 to 100 a week.

Chatswood has all the shops in a couple of large inter linked malls. The beaches are also 20 - 30 minutes drive away.

Public transport is cheap as chips and a weekly that covers most of Sydney is about $44.

Your hospital request makes me think that you are of a nervous disposition. There are plenty of hospitals all around Sydney but lets hope you do not need one.

What sort of entertainment do you want?
