Default North Queensland holiday

We're coming over in late January for a long break and intend to head up to North Queensland for about a week. We really wanted to just hire a car a follow our noses so as to get to see the places that organised tours don't get to. We would like to do some trekking in the rain forest, explore the barrier reef, get some sailing in. Is it possible to easily get around up there, find B&B accommodation and explore or should we opt for something more organised?

Any must do suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Its very easy, we recently drove from Brisbane to Cairns, its a well trodden route, so you should have no problems. If you want to get a bit further into the sticks you can head inland quite easily. Just get a good map, and a Lonely Planet guide. Don't bother pre-booking accomidation, its easy to find as you go along.

About four weeks, which included three or four days sailing in the Whitsunday's, two night on Fraser, and in a couple of places we spent a night or two as we could not be arsed travelling and moving around any more. With four weeks we had to "keep pushing on," but we had eneaugh time to be able to relax, do lots of things, and not worry too much about the time issue. I would not want to do it with any less time though.
