Default new comer!

Hi,
I have been led to this site through a friend who has just gone through the defacto visa for australia. I am about to start the same thing and have read all the 'stuff' on immi.gov. Only problem is my partner and I are currently in Canada for a year travelling around. Do you think it would be wiser for me to start my application here or wait til I get back to the UK and do it then? Also I know that it says you have to prove you've lived together for at least a year. We've lived together for about 3 now, but this year because we're travelling we have no lease to prove it, so how will I show that we're 'living together'? Would a canada joint account, travel tickets and photos be enough? OOOOh I can tell I'm going to stress myself out over this thing! Hope you can help,
Lindsey :scared:

Welcome to the forum Lindsey, if I was you I'd forget applying at the moment & just enjoy whats left of your year travelling around Canada.
You only live once so relax & take it all in then once your back you can start planning the Aus move.

Welcome. I don't want to worry you unduly but besides proving you live together etc many skilled visa categories require you to have had certain proportions of recent work experience in your profession. Being away for a year may be an issue for you in that respect. It is 8 months since I applied for my visa so I forget the rules but you may be wise to get a free consultation with a migration agent just to make sure you don't preclude yourself from applying for a few years.

Hi there,
Welcome!! I did the spouse visa thing and although I'm no expert (Hopefully Jeremy will come along with the proper facts soon!) I reckon as long as you've got proof that you were living together 3 years ago up until you went travelling you should be fine. Just present all of that with the tickets to show you're still together. Joint accounts are also very useful. Basically they often make you jump through hoops but in the end if you are a proper couple you should be dandy!
Don't stress too much!!
Jem
