Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
helloo guys
just to share with u the horrible expirence with emirates airlines after I heard from some posts that they r good . on my way back from melbourne I was few kilos overweight ,i had 30 kiloes and they just allowed for 22 kiloes ,and i was not expecting this becasue I have been told by the agent that they allow 30 kilos, so I had only few dollars in my pocket ,and i tried to explain that i cannot pay the extra 8 kilos and if they can just make an exception ,but they totally refused ,so I had to leave 8 kiloes of my lauggage in the airport beside some bin  , while the staff on the counter smiling ,when i was doing this  . I cant imagine how come they cannot make an exception in such cases . anyways this was the first and LAST time . by the way their logo is "Fly emairates" I guess it should be " NEVER FLY EMIRATES" |

If that happens to your baggage, are you prepared to claim a smaller amount because the airline says "Oh, sorry, were a bit short on cash, so we'll only pay you liability for 15 kg's"? Lavinia |

Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
Well, two things, sort of opposite views on this.
1. I think taking 8 Kg more than your allowance is ripping the arse out of it a bit. A couple of kg, maybe up to 5Kg, but 8kg! Nah 2. If some fat bloke waddles up 40 Kg heavier than me, does he have to pay extra? That annoys me too. And he gets to crush me all the way to UK. OK so, I assume I've pissed off both sides of the argument :o JTL |
Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
My mother in law and friend took back half stock of WA wine with them after xmas :D , totalled 29kg each, only supposed to have 20kg, they were prepared to pay but no one at Perth (Emirates check in) batted an eyelid so you can't knock the airline for that, anyway check in staff are usually recruited by airport.
No bad experiences by any of our visitors so far, just for those who have already booked tickets and I have travelled with them and many other airlines.... ...no probs |

Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
Always assume the worst, that you will have to pay for the excess, and then you'll often find they will split the difference if you are pleasant and polite. Rolling up for an international flight, with excess baggage and no means of paying is just not a good idea!
Incidentally, your actual allowance was almost certainly 20kgs, so by giving you 22 they were already being generous. I'd never fly emirates again either, but thats to do with rude and incompetent staff, not baggage  |

Badge They should have a weigh bridge type thing, just before the check in counter, so all your family and luggage are weighed as you are waiting to check in. Your TOTAL weight is registered. If your total weight including body mass, kids buggies, 'Badges drugs stuffed in his jacket pockets' etc exceeds their assigned weight for per passenger, you get charged. No leeway. Is that not fair  Cheers, JTL |
Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
BTW - Pollyana's Useless Fact of the Day - some airlines, esp in the US, actually allow for extra "passenger" weight - for example, if the passenger manifest (list) shows there is a US football team on the flight, then they increase the amount of fuel required, and lessen the amount of freight - and maybe even passengers - carried, simply because they know that these passengers will be larger than the average.

Just ring the airline and tell them you are a member of the Lard appreciation society, and also your wife and family are lard connoisseurs, and you are going to a lard eating contest. You'll be fine, they'll double up the fuel load, and re-inforce the seats for ya. Cheers, JTL Remember and mention lard |

And u say you had a few dollars in your pocket, what about a credit card of some sort? I have paid excess baggage charges in the UK for Emirates using my credit card. Sorry mate, I unnderstand that having to toss your stuff into a bin must have been a miserable experience, but it is still no fault of the airline. |

Amazingly they let me off. KAZ :D |

OK so, I assume I've pissed off both sides of the argument :o JTL My MIL tried to wangle LOADS of extra stuff in her suitcases when going back to Oz from holiday with us last year. We all told her to lose LOADS of stuff before going to the airport, which she did. She was still WAY over the limit when checking in though and the FIL wasn`t too pleased (too say the least). He told her to chuck loads of stuff out and just leave it there. We took back 2 (TWO) heavy-ish black plastic bags back home of clothes. Probably about 8kg per suitcase over. Airlines don`t mind a few kilo`s over (and I also load up my jacket and we put our heavier stuff in our hand luggage which never really gets weighed), but try and take the piss and you get what you deserve. |

Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
We travelled back from Aus to UK in Oct 2003 with jonah when he was 5 months old...... between hubby & I we had 40 KG & travelled back with approx. 95 KG!!!!!! Ohmigod... were we expecting a MASSIVE overlimit excess charge or what....???? Well I don't know exactly what happenned but the check in staff saw Jonah in the baby sling across my front & were smitten! They couldn't have cared less about the amount we were over as they didn't even mention it!!!! LOL Infact, the check-in staff actually phoned to the Customer Services desk & asked them to bring a "borrow" pushchair so I could have a rest from carrying him!

Re: Never Fly Emirates!!!!!!!!!!
we flew with emirates couple of weeks ago and i have nothing but good to say about them my wife and i 2 daughters and my mother in law flew from birmingham to perth.
the cabin crew were fantastic and treated my daughters like royality and nothing was to much trouble for them. what we did notice at perth airport on the return journey was the amount of people being pulled up for being over their luggage weight allowance but we also noticed that it wasnt emirates staff doin the check in as in birmingham but some bunch of smug arrogant aussies that were of very little help. dont know if this is the same case in melbourne |

There are regulations pretty much worldwide that state one bag cannot be more than 32kg - for the same Health ans Safety reasons.

the other reason they check for cabin bagage is if it falls out of the overhead lockers and youve got over your 5kg,and it lands on your head...its going to hurt....more importantly if it falls on some body else,i would sue the arse of the persons who's bag it is not the airline |

8 Kilos more is alot of $$$ in extra fuel (and other things), people don't realise that there is plenty behind the check in desks for the operation of an aircraft, airlines do exceptions, but 8 kilos... Im sorry.
It's a complex operation, not easy as some think it is... And i don't think we should judge an airline just because of that. Kind Regards, Pedro, a student airplane driver ;) :p |
