Re: My experience looking for employment in Oz
We like many found that until you were here they just gave you the run around.
Speaking from the experience of my husband and I and friends once you are here you go round in circles still while you apply and they don't answer, you get job interviews that are really postive then hear nothing and then you find the correct job for you and everything goes fine... .

So this is very much a two-way street; the Aussie govt does it to Brits working in Australia, and the British govt does it to Aussies working in Britain.

I do wonder about the TRA and how difficult it is to get a license for your trade once you have your visa and are in Oz. I know they are reviewing the licensing sytem for tradies but part of me thinks that the unions seemed very lukewarm to the changes (perhaps a shortage of trades works in their favour).

The unions do have tremendous power in Australia; we're way behind the UK in that regard, I'm sad to say.

If they give you a visa to become a permanent residents then why not employ you - tell me we are not as good as citizens!! when I was looking for a job I was told I did not have "Perth experience" - can anyone enlighten me - still have not found out exactly what that means...

Australian aircraft maintence jobs were being sent offshore to asia, dont know if its happened yet, is it really still on the demand occupation list Have you searched the airline forums? for more info
Its like the building industry, housing starts overall have turned way down, so a lot of trade jobs now are woop woop. Nowhere near the vacancies there were 2 years ago.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Avionics) 4114-15 is still on the Australian Skilled Occupations List and the Selected Areas Skill Shortage List (SSASSL), not MODL.
My wife has the trade which is on the MODL.

As for UK experience I've had no problem there. Engineering is a universal language. Same for my South African experience in the UK.

You should see the shit that they have got up to on the new railway line in Perth for instance. The unions run that project, not the government or the contractor.

When I was in Australia, I refused to join the unions as a matter of principle. The reps would give me the standard pep talk, and I'd say "Thanks, but no thanks."
I'd then receive the standard guilt-trip lecture, to which I'd say "No thanks" again.
Finally I'd get the "Well, don't say we never warned you..." spiel, and that would be that.

You could do what most TRA skilled migrants do when in Ozz .................FRUIT Picking or cleaning motels , or if you have a proffessional qualification you could aspire to drivving taxis ..........
