I am sure BB's reasons go far deeper than she can realistically portray in a few sentences, and in a place where emotions can't be understood. It's not fair to label her as selfish based on what little information has been given.

I feel for BB as this must be a really difficult time and anyone with any ounce of sense would know that giving up a beloved pet is not a decision you take likely.

This link has a ginormous list of border collie rescue places

http://www.dogpages.org.uk/breedbs.htm

and the UK Border Collie Rescue ( based in Richmond North Yorkshie) can be contacted on 0870 4445838.

I wish I could have him, I really do.

Good luck

It`s fair enough to not have a dog if he`s a danger to your kids... that`s a different story.

But to leave a dog here when it`s nothing to do with money or health........

Your best bet if you really need to leave him here is to contact the RSPCA or Blue Cross... at least they can properly vet anyone who might be interested in him. You may not even have to leave your dog there until you go... maybe they can help you find a home before you leave. They`ll ask for a small donation.

Thanks pollster,

Thats a good web site, it makes me feel terrible when i think someone has to RESCUE him, if you know what i mean. I want to meet the people who he goes to, and tell them about the little things he likes, make sure they chase him with vacuum, that kind of thing.

But somewhere that rescues them, would be better than any old dog home, because Border collies are quite special, you need to understand them (a bit livey, and attention seeking)

- I`m not making any firm judgement. Just expressing my general opinion.

- Exactly. From what was written though, this dog hardly sounds like Zoltan Hound of Dracula.

- The dog would be happy in Aus with it`s `parents`. It`s the parent(s) who wouldn`t be as happy with the dog restricting them. The dog isn`t going to die in Oz, and the flight/quarantine reason is pathetic.

No other reasons were given initially, so I can only comment on what was written first.

If it`s going to be a world harder to rent in the area you want to go to, then that`s your decision.... at least that`s a better reason to leave a dog here... but surely some plan could be made.... you`ll have 30 days to find a dog-friendly house.

We have 2 border collie-crosses. One is brilliant and the other is more border-collie and reasonably nutty/moody/demanding. We have felt too guilty to take the nutty one back to the Blue Cross... (cos to him it would be like jail). Even spent out on a doggie psychologist which helped with some of his problems... but unfortunately he still has many more.

We`ve had him 8 or 9 years now.

Border-Collies are very different, and generally aren`t very good `kiddie` dogs..... We`re lucky our nicer Collie was crossed with a Retriever.... very placid and cool, calm, collected.

We tried re-homing our nutty one once (privatley), and even accepted a seemingly nice couple who took him after answering 100 questions (inc he doesn`t really like other dogs, do you have any others? One small one was the reply). After trying to phone them for two weeks about a month later (to see how he had settled in), we went around and saw that they had about 10 or 15 dogs in their flat. Needless to say I took our dog back and said a few choice words.

That`s why I think someone who can do all the vetting (see the persons house etc) would be better than trusting someone yourself that you don`t know.

Good luck in whatever you decide is best for your dog.

We breed Newfoundland dogs, and aside from personal circumstances, i wouldnt part with the 4 we have now for love nor money, if OZ GOV said sorry you cant bring them all, im afraid we would stay here.

Years ago, when i was about 21 ish we had a beauitiful Rottweiler, Zeus.... top breed, show potential etc etc etc... i doted on him, he was my soul mate (sounds sad)

Couple or more years later we had our first child, and then another and Zeus although soft was a bloody lump, with the sense of direction and braking of a Lorry with 3 wheels.

We decided he had to go.. so we placed an ad, free to good home, my names zeus, etc etc...

I couldnt handle parting so me and debs went away on holiday, and left my mum to sort suitors out..

she had hundreds of calls, shed prepared a LIST of questions and narrowed it down to 3 people..

she visited each and every one, and decided upon a young irish family who had just moved to england, they had left a rotty behind and their house was huge, great secure garden, and they wanted zeus as a pet.

We arrived back in uk, all smiles and somewhat sad but also happy.. weird but i guess ya know the feeling..

3 years YES three years later, 9pm knock at my door.

Was a lady asking if we were the owner of zeus, i asked her in, the short version is, irish family sold Zeus for £500.00 the day after they had him, to a pub as a guard dog, ZEUS was useless, he scared himself when barking..

This lady and her husband rescued zeus from a home, she asked for the papers, after dilligent checking they were KOSHA.... we didnt give them the papers, KC i mean.. but she said she understood when we explained the history...

TO THIS DAY, i still beat myself up about this situation..

Think long and hard a dogs for life !

Absolutely PP. We had to leave our beautiful, much loved Kelpie (bit like a border collie) on Oz. We got him when he was a pup and trained him up. He would follow me everywhere and was the most faithful thing in the world. But we decided not to bring him with us to the UK - he's a working dog and he would have hated it over here. So we left him with friends and he has a fantastic life. I miss him a huge amount and have a photo of him on my desk (no photo of Mr Bundy - does this say something??!!).

When we go back to Oz we are going to get one of his offspring. Can't wait.

It isn't always the right move to take a pet with you. You have to think of what's best for the pet too. Even if that is heartbreaking. But if you don't take your dog, find him a good home and you'll feel a tiny bit better knowing that he is okay.

hiya Angie try Kennel Club - ask for for Border Collies rescue centre they usually are found in yellow pages or try their main office in London (directory enquiries should have the number) and they will put you in touch the that specialist centre - then at least you will know he's going to a home that really wants a border collie and usually knows all about them

I know its really hard but try and do it sooner rather than later if you are definately not taking him.

We unfortunately advertised our old poodle to go to an older couple etc - well to cut a long story short we let a 30 something couple have her (shes 11) and they garanteed they'd love her etc (they'd never had a poodle before) we got the yes, yes we REALLY want her etc even for her age etc - 3 weeks later we had a phone call cant cope - dont want her can we bring her back!!! so take advise from me deffo try the kennel club.

By the way, after all that heartache, we decided even though she's really old we're gonna give her the chance to come if the vet says its ok otherwise, well we wont discuss that sad option as we certainly wouldnt put her or us through the heartache of going to yet another home (she has a dicky heart) .

Best of luck let us know how you get on

Cor its a bit frightening really when you read this posts about re-homing dogs - why the hell do people offer them homes if they arent really interested in them??? Dont they realise those animals have feelings too.

I wanna set up my own rescue centre when we go to Perth - maybe I can take in all the waifs and strays (sorry no ex-husbands allowed )

I really dont think its fair to fly him that distance, then quarantine him.

Someone out there will love him as much as me, (sniff, sniff) its making me cry, hes lying on my feet now!!

Angie.

ps.hes not making me cry BECAUSE hes lying on my feet, just before someone picks that up
Hiya Brummie Bird,

I understand your plight, but we are taking our dog, he is a pure bred Dalmatian and will be just a year when we take him. I am worried about the flight as well but know that he will be fine and get over it, he would be lost without us, besides that the quarratine is only 28 days and you can visit your animals. We are taking our two cats as well. Our dog is really mardy and it is going to be hard as he will really pine for us but i just don't trust anyone else to have and love him the way we do. So like you have your reasons for not taking your dog, we have ours. The good thing is that we have family out there and if we want to travel they will gladly have him for awhile.

Good luck in finding him a good home.

Hi Brummie,

I understand exactly what you are going through. Been there myself, luckily for me and Foxy my dad has agreed to have her. She now lives with him and his great lump of a dog Romulus. I hope you find a solution that is good for you and George.
Thinking of you,
Sarah
