A slight detour on the topic, but if you want to get a multi-region player, then Singapore Airport duty free is a great place to get one. They have brands like Sony, and they are region free.
I got one that has all of bells and whistlles (no scart), and as I travel a lot, have a collection of DVDs across most region codes, plus some hookey ones from China, Thialand, Indonesia. I've not had mine defeated yet.
Might be something to think about if you get a Singapore stop over.

We just bought a new Sony DVD player here and the sales guy said Sony won't say it, but they are all multi-region now. It's getting delivered Monday - so let's hope it works like he says!
