You must be having a laugh. Having worked here now in the bulding game for nearly 9 months I'd say there is still an abundant shortage of skilled tradies. Only problem just now is that a lot of the work is 'in the pipeline'. Come August/September there is supposed to be a boom within the industry and they'll be crying out for experienced people.

can i ask have you a visa yet ?
if not i would worry about getting the visa first as that could be a 2 year wait
i would worry about where to head once you have that sorted as things can chop and change very quickly with regards to work

The message was more to take anything Weebie says with several handfuls of salt! He seems to have a mission to convince any prospective migrant that they might as well not bother as their skills are worthless and they will be considered trash in Australia - maybe not if you bring $1m or so with you.

Is there really that much building work in Melbourne
, cant say I noticed much last time we were down and the melb BIL says its still pretty tough and highly competitive, ( cut throat to get jobs ).
We are mainly into commercial construction now and cant say I noticed much of that at all, certainly no boom factor, but maybe I was just in the wrong areas.

ive been here 4 years, things are up and down,i mean that in the positive not the negative..from what i can gather thats perth...
touch wood i aint been out of work yet....
at the moment its a little slow, but i dont know anyone who aint working...
im sure theres room for a few more...
ive spoke people who are flat out, then others that are not so..unless you get yourself on a big job, your never going to have more than a month or so in front of you, thats how it is here,,
so,if it was me coming over here,i would like to read that there was loads of work here and i was never going to have to worry about being out of work...but i cant write that, get yourself on a plane, try not to worry and you will find work here.....
oh and if your just referring to perth, there are other place in WA to work, that are apparently booming, but it aint here in Perth and that is a fact.
rates are an average of 270 a day....
just read this again and i would also like to add, things get easier here after a while, you meet people get regular custom and so on and so on..
good luck...and god knows where ill be when you get here, but you nevr know i may be able to help yer out..

If roofing is slow do you know if there is much road work going as he worked for our local council on the roads & highways for 10 years as a gang foreman. We thought he might be able to fall back on those skills if we were desperate, he's also got his HGV after driving the wagons and winter gritters. Any info would be greatly appreciated. ::

Hi Aston, is there much roofing work? My OH is a roofer and we are coming out to Perth July next year once our eldest has sat her GCSE's. He has his own business at the moment with plenty of work so we were hoping he wouldn't struggle out in Perth........he's a hard worker (7 days a week) and very good at what he does, hence plenty of work due to his good reputation.

it hasnt been this quiet since the 80's. if theres going to be a boom in 6 months house prices had better drop then cos 1st home buyers are getting priced out of the market and land releases are few and far between.have a look at alkimos, nearly 2 years now and still no power or water. if there's a shortage of trades how come prices are at a 5 year low and every week trades are hawking themselves around the sites

really have only just started out, only looking to see if we can make the figures work, and if they did, then start on the visa. but at the mo still very uncertain.
