it hasnt been this quiet since the 80's. if theres going to be a boom in 6 months house prices had better drop then cos 1st home buyers are getting priced out of the market and land releases are few and far between.have a look at alkimos, nearly 2 years now and still no power or water. if there's a shortage of trades how come prices are at a 5 year low and every week trades are hawking themselves around the sites

can i ask have you a visa yet ?

if not i would worry about getting the visa first as that could be a 2 year wait

i would worry about where to head once you have that sorted as things can chop and change very quickly with regards to work

Very sound advice. Looking at the job market in Melbourne or Perth in March 2011 if you don't have a visa is pointless. It might take over 2 years to get the visa and who knows what jobs will be around in 2 years? Anyone got the crystal ball out?

Not saying that at all - WA certainly has the lower unemployment rate, not that Vic's is high.

The message was more to take anything Weebie says with several handfuls of salt! He seems to have a mission to convince any prospective migrant that they might as well not bother as their skills are worthless and they will be considered trash in Australia - maybe not if you bring $1m or so with you.

Is there really that much building work in Melbourne, cant say I noticed much last time we were down and the melb BIL says its still pretty tough and highly competitive, ( cut throat to get jobs ).

We are mainly into commercial construction now and cant say I noticed much of that at all, certainly no boom factor, but maybe I was just in the wrong areas.

Hi Aston, is there much roofing work? My OH is a roofer and we are coming out to Perth July next year once our eldest has sat her GCSE's. He has his own business at the moment with plenty of work so we were hoping he wouldn't struggle out in Perth........he's a hard worker (7 days a week) and very good at what he does, hence plenty of work due to his good reputation.
If roofing is slow do you know if there is much road work going as he worked for our local council on the roads & highways for 10 years as a gang foreman. We thought he might be able to fall back on those skills if we were desperate, he's also got his HGV after driving the wagons and winter gritters. Any info would be greatly appreciated. ::

things change all the while here so things may be boom time again when you come over,,so don't worry..i reckon a good roofer could earn big bucks here..most of the work is single storey and they use these small type barrow hoists that they pull round from job to job with em..but they also use tin on the roofs here and call em selves roof plumbers..any way both types would be p1ss easy to a good uk roofer...

eh and with your hubbies qualifications,,,your hubby aint going to look back,,there are more adds for drivers than tradies..so youll be o.k..

good luck..
ast..

Ads for home building change and that gives you a clue that things are a bit slow at the moment. Last week I heard a home builder offering 'free' ducted aircon with their new homes, 'worth $15,000'.

really have only just started out, only looking to see if we can make the figures work, and if they did, then start on the visa. but at the mo still very uncertain.
