Moving to Perth
Hi everyone
Me and my girlfriend are moving to Perth in Jan 2012, and are starting to research suburbs to rent in. We are both 31 and no children ... yet
We are both outgoing, I am looking for somewhere with good sports facilities, im a keen cyclist, swimmer and runner, whereas the other half is looking for somewhere with nice cafes, restaurant culture. We have been looking at victoria park, would anyone know what it is like? or offer other suburbs where we both might be happy?
Many thanks
Chris

Re: Moving to Perth
I liked vic park as it felt more like a community withthe cafe, bar, shopping strip down the centre.
A lot of perth areas, especially the north are massive sprawling souless areas where you never see anyone on the streets but vic park had a more lively feel, also it had cheaper rents than some areas.
However, as theres more people around you do get a few odd crazy one wandering around.
It is nice and close to the city though if you are working there. Overall I would recomend it as a good place to start
If you are looking north of the river, balcatta / morley also have reasonable rents but not as much character. Morely has a big shopping centre and its not to far from the centre, so you can commute easily.
Hope that helps, good luck

Re: Moving to Perth
First of all good luck with the move!
My aussie wife and I moved to Perth 18months ago- her family is here and we were expecting our first child. We initially moved to Carlisle(after a period with the in-laws)- this was within shouting distance of Vic Park. The resturants are good, plenty of good shopping, small specialist stores. Sometimes it does feel a little european.
We have since moved to Kensington- slightly more expensive but nice and peaceful with plenty access to cycle paths, Vic Park, South Perth and the CBD.
Carlisle is becoming very busy and less inviting to stay in- lots of split blocks now and increased traffic. Areas such as Kewdale are pretty good and have good amenities. Como and Manning are fairly nice areas too- easy local access to everything you might need.
Personally, I would find it diffcult to live anywhere else in the city- i love the proximity of vic park and the shops it has to offer. Kensington is a lovely place to stay and the ease with which you can get to all city centre attractions is amazing.
Anyhow, if you have any specific questions please do not hesitate to contact me. And the cycling is DAMNED good out here!
