Sydney may be Australia's world city but it's not really one

Sao Paulo is the 15th wealthiest city on an overall GDP basis - which is a kind of silly way to measure it as it has major poverty and wealth equality and distribution issues and cities like Vienna and Zurich could never be close to the top

The wealthiest city in the Southern Hemisphere on a per capita GDP basis is Perth - and per capita is a better way of measuring this because as we know, Australian cities (for example) have low levels of poverty and inequality on a global scale (there is no Favela in Melbourne!)

So, to summarise, Melbourne feels a lot sunnier and warmer than London. In winter, here down by the bay, we don't get frost, although inland areas do, and we can grow tropical and sub-tropical plants. In summer it is often too hot to do much except collapse in a hammock with a beer.

I love the weather here.

that is good!!!

what about feeling of being "sandwitched" that you have in the streets of London? especially the centre? recently it feels as though the whole europe is migrating here....for jobs probably, but in a way it sucks for people living here and when you simply want to go home from work.

Sorry for asking so many things, is just that it's a big move for us and we cannot afford to just "drop by" and visit before deciding to move yes or not as it's too expensive for us to basically having a holiday to "check it out"...

thanks all,
Lorraine

Melbourne is not as crowded as London.

Depends. Obviously closer to city you get it will be worse. You could buy an hour out, have lots of space but then an hour commute on very crowded trains. Opposite weather probs to uk. Signs already up that tracks may buckle warp in next 4 days 36 / 39 c temps.

It's kind of interesting. Aussies have this thing about being as close to the centre of the city as possible. They like to feel in the thick of it and it cuts the commute. Therefore prices close to the CBD are silly money, but really it's best for the young who want to go out every night (and they can't afford to live there).

They tend to look down on the suburbs, yet even here the times into the city by rail can be 20-30 mins and the norm is still detached house and nicer surrounds. In fact, if you want rural acreage, you can still get it within 40mins of Melbourne by train - the boundary is quite sharp.

The des-res tend to be 3-10km out to be fair. London is much the same unless you head east or southeast (and even then that is changing)

I like to be in the thick of it because there are things going on outside the front door, or a short walk away.

Not really too much going on in the suburbs unless you like watching the neighbour mow his lawn.

I guess the thing is I've lived in London, and done all that. It loses its lustre and Melbourne isn't at the same level as London anyway. I'd rather the space, the lack of traffic, etc. It's not as if its two hours to get into town when needed.

Fair enough. Personally I'm not too keen on suburban Australia. I would much rather live in a small town and be in commutable distance to the city. Not sure if that's possible in Melbourne but unfortunately due to the state of the train system, its quite difficult in Sydney

Rather a damning judgement on a huge part of Australia's population. Many people will never earn that much no matter how hard they try.

Did I mention any other Australian cities?
