Does anyone have any recommendations on where to live in Melbourne - the best or better areas. Would then hope to move out to Geelong at a later stage.

Why not move to Geelong right away??

Depends on budget, amount of time you want to be commuting.

Portsea, Mt Martha, Mt ELiza are all nice by the beach but along commute into the CBD.

Williamstown is nice but very close to big industrial/port (think huge gas and oil storage tanks)

Brighton, St Kilda, Elwood all very nice and near/on the beach and close to CBD.

Elsternwick/Caulfield/Malvern slightly further inland and closer to the CBD (but still only 20 - 30 mins from the beach).

South Yarra - few mins from the CBD but more for young professionals or DINKY's ie its great shopping for fashion but not so much for family items.

Coburg/Brunswick very close (just north) to the CBD. Close to the Zoo and an easy Tram line down hill to the CBD. Have only travelled up the main street and not all the way so cant comment but looks okay.

Mt Waverley/Glen Waverley/Ashburton/Glen Iris - reasonably close and nice "suburbia".

Other areas I dont really have much experience or first hand knowledge about.

Morning Kiwi! You're up early! What's your opinion on Frankston South? Seems close to Frankston station for 1 hr commute to CBD but has big sections and seems to be more Mt Eliza stylee than Frankston stylee?

Have a list of about 7 boats - they all seem to do some good deals at the show so think I will make a decision and attend next years with a wad of cash.

Have you seen any specific property you want us to have a look at? ie drive by with digital and notebook Perhaps take a vide of the local hoons taking a car (without the keys) or the tracksuit brigade?

Little one had a nightmare so is sitting watching DVD with some milk with Daddy.

Oh poor C!! E has been terribly whingy last few nights... wont go to bed without 2 hours extra cuddles!!!

Bout properties - no point in us looking at specific ones until we get there I suppose as they're bound to have gone well before we can buy them!!! But thanks again for the offer.

Hoping to exchange on the house next week AND apparently we get a final decision at work tomorrow week as to whether we get outsourced!

The reference to specific property is more for you to get a feel for the area that the property resides - ie if a certain road or area seems to tick all the boxes - what the agents dont give you is the shots of "normal" life ie the shops the width of the street - the flow of traffic (even type of traffic ie big trucks)

What is the Melton region like? I spoke to a lady today at the school and she says her sister lives in Melton, so just wondered if any one had any in put on this area.

Haven't been out that way yet.

Its out to the far west and looks part rural part urban. Not sure but this might be close to the flight paths? There were a few posters from Sunbury which is north east perhaps they might have some closer insight.

Thanks any way , as we are country folk and not city folk, it might be worth a look for us. Hubby says he wants to live close to the ammenities (with in 30 mins drive) but wants space and countryside around us. Any idea what area fits the bill

I'd say head east, away from the sea. But I haven't really been that way yet, only to the Yarra Valley, which is more than 30 minutes from amenities. Maybe somewhere like Upper Ferntree Gully?

Mandy, just read this thread, you might be interested in the dandenong ranges, its not to far from cbd, nor penninsule about 35 mins in other direction. There is lots of towns there clustered together with beautiful scenary, greenery etc, nature trails, puffing billy steam train goes from emerald through the dandenong ranges, its very picturesque. Or wantirna near fern tree gully is also a goof family suburb within 5 minutes of knox city, a huge shopping area with cinemas , restaurants, bars gaming places etc, great for the kids. If you want to go further out , then pakenham near berwick is on route to 'THE VALLEY' gippsland, which is country the further down you go. Pakenham is really only newly developed in past few yrs, so house and land still cheap and they have great plans for future. Its also last stop on train for melbourne line straight from flinders street in cbd.

I shall have a look on the map. Sounds good to me.

Thanks so much for your information, I have a lot to be getting on with. As someone else mentioned we might be better off heading straight to Geelong.
Anyone have ideas on good areas in Geelong. Highton was mentioned to me but I was wondering where else?

There are already two Ex pats in Ferntree Gully so its getting way to busy.

You could also look around Berwick area Mandy.
