Vanessa, I'm just reading some of the replies regarding schools, i dont want to offend anyone and i hope i have done so, as i said before i work for the education dept, and i can assure all of this you dont need to pay lots of money for a good education even though some want to send there kids to private school in Toorak ( thats like royalty) the rowville area has become large the school has two campuses and growing. there Yr 12 results are OK for students, i know of people who send there kids there and the staff & kids are all friendly, i suppose its a case of what is best for your kids NOT what money "May" buy.

all the best to you

Now then the areas you mention monbulk is in the dandenong ranges a beautiful and stunning area, thats about 25 mins drive from our place we live in rowville.
Monbulk & belgrave are the best of the two you mention, dont expect house prices to be cheap mate they are not but life style is fantastic.

Now then Ive been told there is a lot of dutch people in the areas we are talking about i work with a dutch bloke and i shall ask him tomorrow for you.
Most schools here accommodate kids who like sports, why dont you do a search on the internet for primary schools both private and state schools.

i told one bloke that you dont have to pay lots of money if your kids are academic people here think they will get a better education if they pay squillions of dollars NOT true. all schools here have tours at given times and believe me mate i work in a school you can get 1st class education for very little outlay.

when you get here say hello to the people in the area dont expect them to come to you, they will appreciate it if you actually just say hello we are new here and introduce your family to people, then you watch most of them open to you.

people Australians and lots of other races and very nice people when you get to know people and they invite you and the family for a Barbie jump at the opportunity thats when you will meet lots more of all denominations.

Barbie's are a way of life here, the kids always settle really quickly, may i ask what type of work do you intend to be looking for.

regards

Arthur

PS

if i can be of any assistance at all for gods sake mate just ask.

as i say we are only 25 mins drive from both monbulk & belgrave so give us a call and we can say hello and maybe you would like to visit our place and enjoy a Barbie with us.

Paul have a look at this website this is real mate and its at Belgrave, its bloody fantastic the kids will love it, children & adults go on this train for us a fantastic place to be

Laura , Ian, backush marsh is on the other side of the city, its very quiet but as ive passed through on the odd occasion its starting to grow now with new housing starting to spring up.

may i ask why have you chosen backhush marsh, i dont know a lot about the place myself so i cannot comment on schools or housing its not my cup of tea though.

Your heart might be in the right place but you should really read before you post.

You seem to also have a fascination of trying to justify public versus private? Seems you are also confusing a "money" issue with a parents right to choose the best school for their kids - which doesn't necessarily mean main stream public school.

Hi Arthur thanks for repyling to my question. The reason i asked about Bacchus Marsh is because i have two job interviews one in Melbourne and one in Brighton when we arrive. We then carried out a bit of research on the area and also looked at schools and it appeared to be an ideal location. We are planning on renting for 6/12 months first so we can check out the surronding areas.
many thanks Ian and Laura

Bacchus Marsh is a long way out of the city on the West side. If you had a job in Melbourne you would probably have at least 1 hour commute each way (probably nearer to 1 hour 20 minutes) and if you had a job in Brighton then it would take you over 1 and a half hours each way.

Rowville is a dump.

There - I said it.

It's a 'no man's land' - its not a swanky new estate nor is it a gentrified or established inner/inner-outer burb, nor is it semi-rural!!

And it's too close to Stud road, and Dandenong.

I wouldn't go as far as Badge but its definetly a pretty soulless suburb.
I lived there when we first came to Aus, its not bad for crime or drugs its just a very boring place.
Stud road that goes through Rowville is a very very busy road & Dandenong is one place to give a wide berth to.

Can anybody share his or her views on the new Springthorpe development near Latrobe University, Macleod. What’s that part of Melbourne like in terms of schooling, travel time to the CBD, shopping etc.

Traveling into the city from there will take about 1 hour on trams, a bit less on trains, and maybe 30-40 minutes driving. As to shopping, its pretty good as you've got Northlands just down the road, and Greensborough, both of which aren't bad malls and I recently heard that they are building a new shopping centre on Plenty Road in Bundoora which is just up the road. Can't answer about schools or what its like to live there though

There is a reasonable indoor softplay centre around the corner from the university - I think it was Grimshaw street.

I disagree massivly! Rowville is far from a dump. Its a suburb with some older estates (some around the 10 year mark) still having good size blocks, but a shoping mall is its center "Stud park". Its good as they go with a good library, supermarket and deli clothes shops etc. It also has its obligatory fast food joints etc.

I will agree with the "souless" aspect of it as it doesn't have a center apart from stud park. It used to be very rural and just horse paddocks like Lysterfield, but the demand for land near the city has done away with much of it now. However if you drive 2 minutes up the Wellington Rd its beautiful and keep going and the scenery gets really pretty

Stud road is a very busy thouroughfare Linking Dandenong, Rowville and Knox with main roads into the city. Total bedlam to cross in peak hour but once you cross it its not too bad. I often use this route if the Monash freeway is conjested.

Dandenong has got a bad rep but they are working on it, theres a lot of low rent housing and it is run down. However Dandenong North which is about 3 ks from Rowville is ok and for real estate theres bargins a plenty

We stayed with my cousin in Rowville while we looked all around the south east burbs too Its a good place to start, but invest in a Melways on day one, you will need it

I couldn't agree more

I agree that you do not necessarily HAVE to pay for decent education anymore that you HAVE to pay for decent health care, You just have to do some homework

Yikes, 1 hour by tram!

I think I will have to reassess my options?
