OH passed his bike licence in Melbourne 9 years ago, and was restricted to 250cc for two years or so. Don't know if it has changed since then.

Only a moped in QLD - http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home...ses_and_codes/
No biking in NSW - http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/...e_classes.html
Or VIC - http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...pesOfLicences/
Mopeds only in WA - http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/licensing/mylicence/1373.asp
Nothing in TAS - http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/lice...e_classes.html
Couldn't find the info on SA - their website is stoopid

My UK bike license was transferred straight to my Oz one.. in NSW.
Had had license for 15 months and am 33 yrs old. have a full unrestricted license for Oz.
Things vary from state to state so best to check the relevant RTA website. However in NSW I believe the license system process is:
Carry out the equivalent of a CBT which will get you an "L" plate. Within 3 months you need to then take a test to get your "P" plates, after you have had your "P" plates for a year you go unrestricted.
When on "P" and "L" you are limited to bikes with a low power rating, the list is on the RTA website.
There are ways to become unrestricted quicker depending on age etc
