I see less graffiti here than where I was in the UK. But now I'm not living in town. Railways are graffitied to death in the UK. No difference there. Used to see loads of trains graffitied in the holding yards in London.
Sorry but the uk is not ukopia.

We recently spent nearly a month specifically touring from Sorrento up to Melbourne City. We didnt stop in Frankston but I wasnt keen on the area to drive through, I cant really explain why apart from it just didnt look inviting. That is just an aesthetic point of view clearly and not meant to offend anyone. Everyone told us South Frankston was nice. We did'nt go there however, much keener on Mt Martha and Mornington. My opinion is that it is not the same all the way down the Pen regards graffiti etc. Mornington, Mt Martha, Dromana, lots of others are lovely. Mornington is a great little town although perhaps would'nt suit me if I was clothes shopping. I found the only places I liked the clothes were the expensive surf shops. Then again that is still only my opinion. Also in my opinion anyone would be happy in Mornington. It has it all, beautiful coast, nice shops, cafes, close to Mt Martha which is great on a day off to potter, and meet up for lunch. Theres playgrounds (clean and not graffitied) and bbqs in the open park area (not too close to kiddies) to use which are free and clean and not vandalised. These are also on the beach side which is lovely. They have strict alcohol rules which seems to mean that people dont hang around these areas getting drunk.
I think it isnt the same as Frankston because it is much bigger there (on appearance) and I also hear it is much more diverse in culture.
This is all just as ever my pinion, not meant to offend anyone living in Frankston. Also to give the original poster some more info as requested.

I agree, but like a lot of people on here you won't ever find me slagging off the UK or OZ.
It is what suits you and your life, at this point in time 1 year off the big 50 our new small house 100mtrs off Main St, Mornington suits us down to the ground. I park my car outside our house on Friday and most weekends the wheels don't turn again till Monday morning.
Moving from Mount Martha the big difference is laying in bed at night it sounds like the Indy 500 has just started
I cannot see anytime in the near future that we won't be living on the Peninsular.

I don't slag off the UK or Aus either. I poke fun at the English from time to time just for a giggle.

I have posted this before but Mornington at night in the middle of the night is no different from Frankston this was born out in the crime figures published this week. My daughter tells me its pretty rough on the streets in Mornington in the night.
Most problems come not from the residents of the area and if there is a pub around then people come from all over.
When my son was a uni he worked in Blockbuster video in Mornington and he said that the while he worked there he saw problems arising and as the children get older in the newer areas it will be no different from Frankston or anywhere else. Its the age demographic, teens etc, young people with high powered cars. This is life its the way it is.
Drugs, well they are everywhere and the more disadvantaged a school the less likely there are drugs, drugs are where the affluent kids are.
You cannot judge an area on face value here in Aus, years ago before the drought everything looked lovely but people have just given up trying to keep the garden alive with water restrictions which have been going on for years.
The problem I see with Mount Martha and Mornington mainly on the eastern side is that there is acres and acres of housing and nothing for young people to do unless there parents drive them. As most parents both work these days these children will be left to their own devices.
I have lived in the area for over twenty years now and I have never felt worried walking around Frankston night or day. My children used to get the train from the city late at night and yes there are undesirables around but lets face it they are everywhere anyway.
To have a pristine wonderful place to live makes for a boring place, what would we talk about if there was not a bit of trouble, or things to moan about.
Do you know what your older children get up to. I did not know I thought I did but now that they are much older and we discuss it I did not have a clue.
Your child might be the graffiti expert everyone is moaning about

Hi All
we have finally made it to mornington after 2 years of planning
first impressions are we really like it ( only got here last tuesday )
we are currently in a short term holiday rental for a month so we are going to start looking at long term rentals this week
we are aiming for mornington , mount martha or mount eliza
is there anywhere we should avoid in these areas
also we have 2 boys aged 8 and 5 and will start ringing schools this week again are there any schools that should be avoided
are the catchment areas really strict over here as we are a bit in a catch 22 situation do we get the school place and then the house or the other way around
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi
I can't help with schools as we don't have kids.
The only real area to avoid around Mornington would be the Tanti Estate around Robinson Rd. It's by no means as bad as people make it out to be, it is a bit run down with a lot of commission (council) housing. I know that compared to the estate I was brought up on it is luxury
The only other area I personally don't like is St Mitchells Circuit, there is nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't do it for me.
You will pay considerably more beachside of the Nepean Highway, the area around Bentons Square is very popular with some really nice houses.
Hope this helps.

Friends of ours possibly moving over next year and they really like the look of Mornington. They'd probably both be working in the CBD though, or at least St Kilda Road. What is a realistic commute time if driving? Is it do-able?

Great thread and some great honest viewpoints.
We are about to book some accomodation in Rye and then maybe Dandenong for 3 weeks or so to hopefully give us a really good idea of what the Mornington Peninsula might have to offer us as a young family (2 kids under 3) so has anyone got any further thoughts on Rye or more recent views of Mornington?

Thanks for the quick reply.
We ideally want to stay in a coatal place and a country location in the Melbourne area to get a feel for both ways of life but if Dandenong isn't any good then can you or others recommend any alternatives for us to investigate?

Agree not Dandenong, its very multicultural and not visually attractive either, I know I worked there for 13 years.
If you are considering Mornington there are holiday lets about but you need to be here out of school holidays. If you were to come at the present time there would be no vacancies and if there were very very pricey.
I recommend Hastings as a spot to use as a base mainly because you have the young children. There is a large pool facility there, plenty of space to run around, also close to other peninsula areas, the mazes, beaches, Balnarring Beach is good for young children. Also its about 15 km from Mornington and an easy drive. There is a train station so if you wanted to go to Frankston you could take the train, also get a train in the Central Business District. There are lots of cafes, good eating places, its a town which is being gentrified, much to us locals in Westernport area not liking that.
Victoriana motel is there.
Other than that look for caravan parks, motels etc.
You could also look at Berwick its very popular with Brits and a lot live in that area has the train also .

Depends what you are looking for. Will you need to commute to Melbourne CBD?
If you want countryside not city then MP is really good. Rye is okay but a long way from Melbourne. Mornington is a nice place to live but again you have to be a dedicated commuter if you want to live there and work in the CBD.
If you can work anywhere then MP is a really nice place. It is more urbanised on the Port Philip coast (west coast) and tends to be more rural on the east coast (but industrial around Hastings).
If you need to be in Melbourne but would like country style living then you need to think about Eltham or places on the city side of the Dandenongs (not to be confused with Dandenong). There may be places over west but I'm less familiar with them.
