Monthly Expences.
Applied in skilled independent category ( Prof. Electrical Engineer ) and may receive my PR in couple of months ahead.
I am planning to stay in Sydney or Melborne last choice if no thing works well to Brisbane.
Can any one figure out monthly expences in AUD for a typical family of two+1child of 5-6years old.
Housing obviously considered as A$ 225-250. Same shall be excluded.

Groceries,Fruit/Veg : 500
Travel (Petrol, Metcards) : 90
Phone : 60
Gas/Electricity :35
We are a couple living in Melbourne and were really lucky to get our apt and the space/storage and proximity to the city for 210 p.w. but the majority of aprtments with less going for them were more liek 250 or 260 p.w. [/QUOTE]
You get more for your rental in Sydney suburbs particularly as you go south and slightly west. 180 will get you 1000 sqmt block with 2/3 beds close to railway line
Groceries,Fruit/Veg : 500

Our 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 60 sq m apartment in North Sydney costs $425 per week, or $1800 per month. Its a real gem though, brand new, 2 large balconies, high/views, pool and gym in building. Well located places in Sydney have to be paid for.
We keep our monthly expenses as low as possible and we spend as a minimum:
Rent $1800
Mobiles $100
Phone/internet $30
Groceries $400
Lunches $100
Power $30
Petrol $120
Car rego/ins/service $150
Train $68
Gym membership $150
Charitable donations $100
So our monthly expenses, before nights out, clothes, holidays or the occasional bottle of wine, add up to about $3000 to $3100 per month. We try to get away we $3,000 if we can.
Square that with the fact that the average salary in Sydney is about $40,000 before tax and you realise why so many strugge financially here. (However, I'm sure we could half our rent if we were prepared to live further out in the sticks and commute in).
