Mining Jobs in Demand?
Mining jobs supposedly ‘in demand’ – even though the industry’s ‘winding down’. A report on the Australian Mining website has suggested that mining jobs are experiencing a boom in in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland, with plenty of roles available. According to the report, engineers, electricians and safety professionals are expected to be in demand until later on this year.

I don't think we're going to see the likes of the recent expansion projects again but I think it's far from over, just settling down a bit. Talking to some of the old boys here, the boom has been on its last legs for 30 years now. There's always maintenance, there'll always be expansion of some sort, mining itself. The house prices need to come down, as no-one is going to be spending 1.5 million on a 4 bed house in a desert, no-one I know anyway

I can't see where a huge amount of jobs will be found especially after all the lay offs. Those of course include skilled engineering and other professionals.
I expect 457's will make up a lot of any further requirements, likely at the cost of local based staff.

But with a lot of mining jobs, it may not be the case of what you know, but who you know...unless you are going to work for Gina for peanuts.....

Loads of 457s being given the heave-ho at the moment
It's far more expensive to employ a 457 than a local

I had feedback from one who said that they had received 500 applications and only had the post up for a day.
Two years ago, for what I do, there was an average of 1500 - 2000 jobs available in Oz on infomine. Yesterday there were 46. A number of them are actualy for residential work in other countries.

The above pretty much fits into what I am being told although not in mining. The onus is on saving money on most fronts to which I have had personal experience with.
One of my local very busy lunch time places now employs only what would appear to be only 457's. He's works them hard and doubt any 'local' would put up with his manner.
The building site now completed in my area had loads of Korean 457's working for them. There are obvious benefits to employing a compliant work force.

Really? I am an experienced miner. Most of my friends are miners. All bar one (including myself) are unemployed. Some have been for over a year. I was laid off in June. Applied for everything that comes up but not even a sniff.

If the mining sector wanted to save money, they'd stop throwing silly money at people that do nothing for it, instead of sending out memos saying you're only to print in black and white, or you're not getting a diary next year. I get the feeling Roy Hill is going to be the first one run as if it's an actual business not a bottomless pit.
