Oz migration master plan

Well here goes, I promised I would post a list of everything I think I need to do to emigrate, being a project manager type, I just have to have a plan! I have grouped it into two main sections, i) the things to do in the UK and ii) things to do in Oz then by each relevant subcategory..

so here goes...


UK tasks :

Key dependencies:-
Got email from DIMIA
Agree when to go!
Agree which suburb to stay in
Agree budget

Visa admin:-
Send off passports
Passports back & checked
Check expiry on passports - all ok

Communications:-
Give friends and family the news
Warm up the kids to the idea!
Advise everyone of your new contact details
Set-up hotmail/global email account
Organise a leaving do!
Update address books - get email addresses for everyone
Get webcam / Video Conf. software & test it out
Redirect mail
Convert mobiles to pay as you go - keep number
Copy all important documents and leave with friend
Place all legal docs/medical info in safe place
Inform electoral commissioner
Return all borrowed items!
Solicitors - update Will
Subscriptions
Notify PC-Proc
Notify PC-What-HiFi

Inland Revenue:
Notify Revenue of intentions
Complete ??? Form
Acknowledgement received
Pay any taxes due
Policies:
Check/cancel NU life insurance policy
Check/IPP D&G policy
Check/IPP Swiss Life policy
Money:
Get banking references
Notify stokebroker (Brewin Dolphin)
Notify banks of intentions
Cancel charities d/d's and move to Oz a/c
CTF ? Get advice on what to do?
Child savings ? Get advice
Close unnecessary bank accounts in UK
Research & agree finance strategy
Open Oz bank accounts
Nominate currency broker
Agree phased money transfer plan
Transfer initial funds to Oz account
Look into Oz credit cards

Schools:-
Give notice at schools
Research Oz schools in chosen area
Complete application forms and send
Place confirmed ?
Look into backup schools

Work (IT Freelancer):-
Give notice at work/contract end date sync.
Advise accountant of Ltd company closure
Close down Ltd company / VAT etc….
Close bank accounts
Update company website
Withdraw any profits and allocate
Update CV so its ready to go
Advise clients
Obtain any references
Advise Inland Revenue
Give accountant new contact details
Notify ISP and move email service to personal
Send out CV to IT agencies in advance

Health:-
Dentist checkups
Checks etc
Any jabs for stopover trips?

Property:-
Notify landlord (2 months notice)
Have a de-clutter
Boot sale / ebay
Pack non essentials away
Round up all the keys!
Get specialist packing equipment (table/wrap)
Removals:
Make a house inventory
Get quotes for removals (door to door - all in!)
Select company
Investigate customs/quarantine issues
Book removal day
Investigate sending any items earlier to relatives/friends
Pack suitacases of essentials
Removal prep day (label everything!)
Removal complete
Read meters
Move out
Get back house deposit
Utilities & services
Cancel SKY
Cancel BT
Cancel Water
Cancel Gas
Cancel electric
Cancel TV license

Cancel house insurance (contents)

Check safety & secutiry ( + for kids)
Advise removals company
Set-up utilities and services (meter readings!)
Rent rebate ?
Look into house purchase/register with agents…

Car:-
Buy car
Get insurance/Rego/ all that stuff
Register for Oz driving licence
Take Oz driving test

Financial:-
Get financial advise
Visit local bank - check accounts
Open any local accounts as required
Credit cards?
Register for tax ?
Diary note to get back $5000 bond in 2 years
Policies & Services
Get life cover
Get housecontents insurance
Get IPP cover

Work:-
Touch base with agencies
Appoint accountant
Set-up Ltd company or equivalent
Set-up company bank accounts
Register for tax etc…
Check the tax rules / laws etc…

Health:-
Register with doctors/dentists
Sort out Medicare
Join local gym/clubs/sports etc
Get loads of sun screen!

Communications:-
Get OzCall phone card - very cheap!
Tell everyone you have arrived!
Check email set-up etc
Get Oz sims for mobiles
Get on the local barbie circuit
Register with British Consulate ?
Get ISP/Internet sorted

Great list - obviously u hav a wonderful analytical mind - can u offer any help on how to actually make the decisions on schools, suburbs, accommodation???? I wonder if I shall ever reach clarity!! ( let alone sanity!!)

All I can say is preperation is the key. If you stick to your plan then you'll be sorted, give yourself plenty of time.
