And OK, I have counted - 3 Huntsman in Tas, 3 in Brisbane - thats during 6 holidays backpacking in Tas, and 17 months living here. And 2 of the 3 times we have had them in the house here, we had a big roach problem - they were looking for food. No roaches now = no spiders. Don't panic. They do eat all sorts of nasties, but can give you quite a scare if they start running like mad. |

The biggest one was bigger than the top of a big jar of mayo as I couldn't catch him in it without damaging his legs. I don't generally kill or damage them if I can help it, but attempted to kill the two in my room as I really didn't have the energy to chase the bastards around the room in the midle of the night. They run like hell if they see you coming with a jar. My problem is that I see them in the room during the day but don't bother until bedtime to try and get rid of them, then they run like mad & I won't sleep if one's under the bed. They make such a horrible screeching noise! I hit the one with my shoe after chasing it all over the bed & sprayed half a bottle of insecticide on the other to kill it & chucked it outside. 15 mins later it got up & wobbled away! :scared:

It's part of aussies pastime taking the piss and winding people up. I'm a friggin kiwi. We get a lot more thrown at us than any poms will get. |

Ok I have awoke and received a PM from Wombat. It appears there was a bit of confusion over a previous posting of mine. Funny enough I was just having a bit of a joke that got took the wrong way.
I too want to officially apologise to Wombat for the 'bash you up' post. I'm NOT that type of person at all, but was really thrown by the rude comment, and retaliated :( All is well (I hope) and I'd go as far as to say I'll buy the guy a beer if I ever get to Oz :) |

OK, There's the Huntsman & other spiders, the bears, the cane toads, the snakes, the roaches, the bee's, the wasps, the flies etc etc
But what about the most lethal one out in Oz as we speak! I've heard these will eat a huntsman without chewing :scared: I think at the end of the day, this is the ONLY one that really bothers me and will have me out armed with my Dyson! http://usera.imagecave.com/pauldw/gecko.jpg Are they REALLY that bad? |
Re: The Migrants Guide to Emigrating and Settling in Australia
Ok, spent the night dreaming about killing Huntsmen & decided my conscience was giving me hell for killing that one & poisoning the other so I've decided to try a friend's eco-friendly alternative in future. She sprays them with heavy-duty hairspray & that immobilizes them enough so you can handle them but doesn't kill them, then she takes them to the park & rinses them down so they are reanimated. I don't know up to which size this will work with Huntsmen but have vowed to go out & but some hairspray for future. Bye, bye Baygon, hello hairspray!

Re: The Migrants Guide to Emigrating and Settling in Australia
What a wonderful way to wake up this morning! I am terrified of any creepy crawly things..
The things that love makes you do! (I'm following my man down to Oz)... He just better be willing to take care of those animals with more than 4 legs. Geckos, no problem. Kinda cute really. But spiders, roaches, etc.. UGH! |
