Yep its a good city to live in for a couple of years My sons love it too, 18 and 21 so all good there.

Trouble is being so liveable means buying something to be 'liveable in' is a bit like trying to board a bus in Downtown Delhi. Crowded, overheated and derelict.

Prices also like a runaway train.

We bought land luckily 2 years ago, but buying till we build has proved futile. The price guide and stamp duty in vic seriously need looking at.

Yeah, they do it every year, The Economist Intelligence Unit doesn't include housing prices and public transport etc in the criteria for Melbourne but they do apply it to all other cities; that's why it keeps coming out as #1.

On a serious note, I see that the EIU charges $5,795 for their report and in its detailed content it recommends a loading factor to employers when setting wages in the cities which aren't too liveable in the rankings. i.e. you'll get a high Damascus, Port Moresby, Dhaka, Lagos or Tripoli loading on your pay! It implies that Melbourne, Vancouver, Vienna, Adelaide, Toronto and Calgary don't require a loading due to their liveability (employers may however put a cost of living loading on the expensive cities independently of liveability)

Gotta love humankind's obsession with quantifying everything, making rankings, etc.

I think the UN had some sort of top 10 list of countries with the (so-called) "highest standard of living" and most of them were not the sort of places anyone would want to move to...

To be fair the EIU is in the business of quantifying things and selling the reports. You are probably referring to the UN Human Development Index rather than 'highest standard of living'. Standard of Living is one thing included in the HDI along with life expectancy, education, literacy and quality of life.

Most not the sort of places anyone would want to move to??

Health system..... Diagnosed with something potentially deadly at the local bulk billing GP's on a "Sunday" afternoon... which was meant to be a visit to get a medical certificate for a cold.. visit Dermatologists in next Suburb (Brunswick) at 10.30 am next morning squeezed in because of the potential risk... Dermatologist phones at home at 7.45 pm with results of 3 samples of pathology results within 2 days, with a Plastic surgeons appointment for the next morning ... operated on within 2 weeks at one or other hospital within 10 k's of home on 31st Aug or 2nd Sept. Private health... out of pocket 400 bucks for the hospital and 200 for the specialists. The Health insurance cost 360 bucks per month for 4 people. A prime example of why Private Health is a good idea. .

Not sure you can better that anywhere in the world.

Low grade/risk .....less than .3 Melanoma. Thank the lord for the Aus system.... fingers crossed of course.

Worry "mostly" over within 4 days from last Sunday.

I'm having a Scotch.

Just went for a medical certificate and the GP picked it up..... bulk biller as well.

That's great news mate, enjoy that Scotch.

NHS - my wife had to wait over 3 weeks for the results of a biopsy and when they didn't come she had to phone up to get them. Luckily, clear too.

One very important bit of information to all about Melanoma.... I had this tested 3 years ago.... An unsual mole on my neck below my ear, the result of working 20 years out in the open in Aus... It came back clear and I was under the misapprehension that meant it would always be clear as it was a different type of Mole.

Apparently not.... even if they register clear/benign in one instance they can turn after time.

I never knew that.

Lucky for me the GP said that definitely doesn't look right, he was convinced it looked wrong, even though I told him about the test, which I thought cleared it 3 years back... and he was proven correct. He insisted I go get it checked asap and his manner made me act immediately..

If you read the full survey list, you will quickly realise just how crap this research is. It has Detroit in at about number 37. A city that Mexican cartels would not would not walk through at night with fear of being mugged. A city that is broke. Unemployment levels at rates that make them jealous of Greece and healthcare stats that are actually worse than a fair chunk of sub Saharan Africa.

The list I saw probably had Sweden and Finland included, maybe Belgium as well. This one is slightly better but still...

1. Nope
2. Just staying short-term...
3. Nope
4. Nope (but if I had to then The Hague would be my city of choice)
5. Been there, done that. Not my cup of tea
6. Nope (though Berlin is quite decent)
7. Nope
8. Nope, though I haven't seen Toronto yet (Vancouver is a 'no' though)
9. YES!!!
10. Biggest NOPE on the list

And funny enough it changes from country to country. According to German press, Tokyo is top and Melbourne 4th.

Each to their own of course. I see you were 'dragged from Singapore to SP' and you give Singapore the only yes. I've been there quite a number of times as well and it is either a 'nope' or 'just staying short-term' for me.

Your top 10 destinations are?

That's because the German press was quoting Monocle's Quality of Life survey which did indeed have Tokyo 1st and Melbourne 4th (after Vienna and Berlin). They weren't quoting the EIU survey which this refers to.
