I lived briefly in Mougins-le-Haut and I can sympathise with your comments on living in France. I think you can't go far wrong if you choose either Sydney or Melbourne.

Both are vibrant, beautiful and friendly cities, but quite different also. One mark against Sydney is that house prices and rents are extremely expensive and in short supply. Sydney is a bit of a sprawling mess compared to Melbourne, but I love it anyway. There is the old adage that Sydney is the girl you date and Melbourne the girl you marry. Still, I think we like perpetual dating - we love the Sydney beaches and harbour, and made a lot of friends here in a fairly short time. If you visit both places for extended periods you'll just get a feeling as to which city does it for you. You won't go far wrong in either place, so long as you have some $$$. I could live happily in either, aside from the fact we have a lot of friend here.

Nice post, I'll be moving to Sydney very soon for work reasons, OMG!!!, from London where I spent many years, I am originally from south America, and my impression is that, Sydney may have that beach atmosphere and laid back sort of similar to the Caribbean (just impression) I surf my self also, I go every year to Portugal or France or Cornwall, so Sydney seems to tick that one also, I know many people from my home country that live in Sydney which is good also compared to Melb, where as far as I know there's one guy I know, there may be more but far more in Syd....but since living in London, of course I enjoy the cultural life, galleries, exhibitions, gigs...I'm more "alternative" like...so in that way, just by impression it seems that Melb could be nicer, plus you can still have beach life and surfing to a certain degree...also I'm single, so you girls on this post, tell me...which girls are better, Sydneysiders or Melb girls? or where is best for single people?

Hey "Romeo", you sound like a pretty well travelled, experienced sort of guy, you'll have no problem in either city with girls - we're ALL beautiful whether married or single!!

I always find it interesting that 'the best beaches' is usually the main topic of conversation when it comes to Sydney or Melbourne.
I am not really interested in beaches so that would never influence my decision - but it seems everyone who moves to Australia asks about beaches first and foremost!
So leaving the beaches aside, I find Melbourne a more relaxed, friendly, easily to get around, and very safe city.
I've never felt threatened or intimidated since living here for about 16 months...I feel like I'm on a permanent holiday and just love soaking up the chilled atmosphere in all the inner city suburbs.
It doesn't really have the 'wow' factor of Sydney but it really gets under your skin.
I've never lived in Sydney but have spent quite a bit of time there. For some reason it just feels a little more intimidating to me and more of a sprawling city. But I love to visit as it is definitely a beautiful place - and visiting is easy as it's only an hour's flight from Melbourne.
As someone else said, it really depends on which place feels right to you.
Good luck with your move, wherever you decide :)

My two bobs worth is, I feel that Sydneysiders in paticular like to ignore what Melbourne has to offer... Its very very probable that for cafe culture and nightlife that Melbourne actually has more than Sydney. I think that Melbournes actual CBD is by far classier more diverse and has more to offer than Sydney's. Mind you Sydney Harbour and the areas around it is probably some of the prettiest City landscape and best lifestyle opportunity in the world, on that basis I think they come out fairly even.

People now thats a subjective issue, Personally I love Sydney people, always get along with them, However I'm a city bod, born and bred in London, that Brashness that city people have I've always been comfortable with... For example... I always seem to get along with Glaswegians...

Complicated eh

I reckon you could flip a coin as a UK migrant, and which ever way it comes up you win.

Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!

This is exactly the dilemma we had in our recce over Christmas and it was literally 50:50.

We chatted to lots of friends in both places and they seemed equally proud of their respective cities and rightly so.

Melbourne: we loved the laid back vibe of Melbourne, it seemed more relaxed and really catered for families. I liked the 'flatness' and the fact that you could really get about with young kids. There also seemed loads to do close-by with vineyards, oceans drive and Phillip Island, which really appealed to us. The salaries are pretty much equal in both Melbourne and Sydney for managerial jobs and house prices are less although from the property investment mags we read, prices have increased by about 30% over the past 12 months in the better suburbs. So, the difference isn't quite as marked as we expected it to be. Also, there are big population growth predicted so property could be a good medium/long term investment there. Traffic and the daily commute also looked miles better compared to Sydney. The one massive downside for us was the climate - lots of people mentioned the '5 seasons in a day', which we experienced whilst we were there. But then again it's obviously loads better than the UK so it depends whether you think hot and humid is a good thing or not (we do!). We were concerned about the cold as climate is one of the key reasons we're leaving the UK - we want an outdoor life all year round.

Sydney: completely agree with the 'girl you date' analogy - it was buzzy and brash but also wonderful in completely different ways. I only actually felt I could really settle in Sydney when we visited the northern beaches, which seemed more family oriented and we were seduced by amazing views of the bay when spending time in friends homes. But then again you pay big bucks for those views! We visited loads of real estate agents and have decided that we'd live in Sydney if we could afford a view and as it looks in reach, Sydney's where we'll start our life in Oz. Also as we're moving from London we think the pace will suit us better and we felt it was easier to move from Sydney to Melbourne than the other way round and we may seriously consider that later on.

To be honest we've been 50:50 throughout and agree that having the choice is a brilliant position to be in. I struggled to compare the two directly as they are completely different - where one is strong the other isn't. I think you need to spend some serious time there to really know what's best for you.

Being a Londoner myself, I reckon thats a spot on decision, I understand exactly what you mean about the pace and the people. The people of Sydney do seem to act like they are from a world city, from my point of view anyway.

One proviso though, dont underestimate like most Sydney seem to, what Melbourne has to offer... It really is like a huge huge onion, with layer upon layer upon exciting layer that unravels slowly to its citizens. I'd be totally amazed if Sydney does have the amount of leisure things to do that we have here... I'm talking about Cafe's restaurants, nightclubs, and specialist shops... When someone mentions the Blue mountains to you in Sydney, come and compare somewhere like Wilsons Prom, which in my opinion is possibly one of the most unique places in Aus...

Chances are after a while, you may miss Europe... thats the time to consider Melbourne.

Come to Perth! We have the beach, and another beach and another beach. And there's always the beach!   (I'm loving Perth actually :p)

Have really enjoyed reading this thread and the more I read about Melbourne, the more that I think that I should check it out.

Good luck to the OP in finding the right place to settle.
