Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Sorry, this isn't really a direct response to the OP, but reading this thread has made me so happy!
I've lived in the UK for almost 15 years and am finally returning to Melbourne in 5 weeks! :eek: In all the time I've lived in the UK, whenever someone realises I'm Australian they say "where are you from, Sydney?". And the majority of people I meet over here who have visited Melbourne said they didn't like Melbourne and when asked why the usual response is "it rained the whole time I was there!". So I ask them how long they spent there and a common response is "we stayed in Sydney 2 weeks and went to Melbourne for 3 days!". Ok so my point is, alot of people don't give Melbourne a fair chance, it may be that it rained for the 3 days they were there but they don't realise that perhaps for a week before that it was beautiful sunshine! :lol: So anyway, sorry for the rant, I just felt compelled to write this as I'm so pleased that there are so many people on here who have given Melbourne a fair go and can see how great it is as I haven't come across many people in 15 years of the same opinion! Sometimes I feel like shouting "Sydney's not the only place in Australia you know!!!!". :rofl: Now I'm not slagging off Sydney or saying Sydney isn't nice, it's a beautiful city and has a lot of attractive qualities, but I'm a Melbournian and biased therefore towards Melbourne. :D Once again, sorry to the OP for not actually answering the question, I wish you all the best in your new life whether it be in Sydney or Melbourne, I'm sure you'll have a great time in either place as they are both lovely cities. |

I, personally, find humidity a big difference. We usually get a week or so of humid weather in the high 20s - and for me that is a killer - I'd much prefer a few days 38+ dry heat instead :) I can't do humidity...
Another thing is here in Melbourne we have lovely cold days in the winter (without the greyness) and if you're into skiing the mountains are here in Victoria. Also, the Grt Ocean rd is not far. |

Oh, and Melbourne has the bigger harbour by a long way! Its so big, that from the Eastern beaches you can watch the sun setting into the sea, you can't do that with Sydney's harbour!

But you're right, Melbourne's bay's water isn't blue, it's turquoise. See attached picture taken at Safety Beach, Port Philip Bay, Melbourne. Buzzy |

Hmmm your profile would indicate you have a financial reason to encourage people to live in Sydney.

Buzzy For the record I love Melbourne and the OP will not regret the decision to move there - sounds like that decision has already been made to be honest. But comparing PFB to Sydney Harbour? :rofl: I could go to Botany Bay (not even Sydney Harbour), right next to the runway to Sydney airport with 747's flying overhead and see water more inviting. I'm serious! Graham ;) Edit - Buzzy, could you also let us know how far Safety Beach is from the centre of Melbourne? I'd guess 50km. |

I chose Melbourne over Brisbane because the beaches are more accessible. I never considered Sydney as I couldn't afford the property prices. Buzzy |

Melbourne = Class
Sydney = Crass |
Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Hey! My bias has got nothing to do with the fact that I work and live in Sydney and love it. It wouldn't matter what industry I was in- my thoughts would be exactly the same!! :D
As for having financial reasons.... I can tell you that I certainly don't need to spend time on forums such as this to obtain work as a BA here in my home town- I just happen to have an unhealthy out of hours addiction to discussion forums and like to chat to ppl about property!! For fear of being seen to spam, I won't list the other forums I frequent on a regular basis, but if you're interested, PM me and I'll provide the details! You'll soon see I'm a forum addict through and through and probably need to get out more!! ;):D I've also waxed lyrical about Brisbane and NZ in other posts so don't consider me totally biased- but come on, guys, how can you realistically compare Sydney's harbour (right in the centre of the city) with the Yarra?! I like Melbourne- I've been there a no. of times now on girls weekends and consider it a wonderful city. Rivalry between us Aussies is legendary, however, here between the two capitals and there will never be a clear winner, as it's such an individual choice. Each city has different offerings and that will always be the case. I must admit, though, that Docklands restaurants are better than Sydney's Darling Harbour offerings and the atmosphere there definitely less touristy and very "Melbourne".... now how about some reciprocation from you biased Victorians?!!! :D |
Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Reciprocal answer....
I was in Sydney for 2 weeks in January and it rained virtually every day:p:lol: Actually, if I had to move to Sydney it wouldn't be a hassle for me. I thought the city was great. Saying that, I still prefer Melbourne which to me is more chilled and a touch friendlier. I think anyone who has to choose between the 2 isn't in a bad position. :) |
