Hi to everyone living in beautiful Australia, but i have a really important question to ask "Living in Melbourne or living in Sydney" i am currently talking my husband around to moving over to u guys next year from France , and hopefully the Australians are welcoming and friendly compared to the French and there isnt a n anti brit attitude. And well i have been looking at both cities and trying to decide which city is better for my family.
So married two young children 3 and 5, professional couple will bring business out, enjoy going out to restaurants , bars, having parties at home, meeting up with other families, going to the beach. We live in the South of France and love the weather here. Melbourne seems like a smaller laid back place with trendy bars , great beaches, plenty of space and the school seem good. Sydney faster pace and busy. Tell me where is better for a young professional family to live for the rest of our lives. Well nearly. Looking forward to hearing replies thye for and against would be perfect. We are coming over for 6 weeks Dec and Jan spending 3 wk in Melbourne. 2 wks in Sydney and 1 wk in Brisbane. The people in Melbourne in my opinion are friendlier in general Melbourne is cleaner - less pollution (again my opinion!!!) Food quality, eating out, choice of restaurants etc I would say are equal. Same with things to do - parks, zoos etc... If you are not sure and you have the time / money, check them both out and see for yourself... As with all places one of them will feel right for you - Melbourne feels more right for me:) Lau x |

[QUOTE=BadgeIsBack;5943549]hmmmm... I'd say Melbourne was more like San Francisco(!). Chicago has more of a negative connotation to me, personally.
QUOTE] I admit (mea culpa) I was being deliberately a little negative but only in the sense that I think that Chicago is the USA's 'second city'? What I really wanted to say was 'Melbourne is Birmingham to Sydney's London (and that is an insult to Birmingham!) |
Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
but really it is all horses for courses.
I love living in Melbourne and feel it offers everything I want. Some friends of ours are from Moscow. They lived in Melbourne for 10 years. 2 years ago work took them to Sydney. She loves it there- says everyone is so friendly and she has settled in amazingly. He would move back to Melbourne in a second. |

I will still stick to the plan 3wks in Melbourne and 2 wks in Sydney. Best start planning my trip. So if we love it omg is visa time how much of a nightmare is that going to be. I thought it would be better going through an agency and letting them do all the hard wk and ground wk, has anyone used an agent before and how did u get on ??? Tillie x:thumbsup: |
Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Melbourne has four seasons, dry and hot summers, cool and wet winters, mild sunny autumns, and sunny but cool spring weather.
The bars are good, so are the restaurants and cafes, the lifestyle is more relaxed, the city itself is nice, the public transport is extensive, there are plenty of parks, property is cheaper, the inner city beaches are ok. The surf beaches on the coast are amazing. There is plenty of Victorian and Federation architecture. It's the sort of place where people are more into art, sport, reading, and talking politics. Sydney has a huge WOW factor because of the harbour. Be under no illusion that the harbour is sublime. The city centre is OK but not as nice as Melbourne. The beaches are total winners, the bar scene is small, instead there are a large number of big pubs with plenty of intoxicated men. The cafes and restaurants are as good as Melbourne but more expensive. Housing and public transport is also more expensive. Sydney has mild and sunny winters, and warm, very humid summers. I agree with one of the other comments saying Melb is like San Fran and Syd is like LA. Both are great. It may come down to if you want more of an outdoor life (Sydney) or a book, arts and bars life (Melbourne). |

Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Melbourne is a bit more on the conservative side than Sydney as far as social circles go. But what you will find is that Melbourne people are more down to earth, less pretentious - in general.
How easy it is to meet people will depend on you. It's like moving to any city, you will really need to make the effort to join groups, be friendly, to invite people over for lunch or a bbq. Melbourne has plenty of book clubs, and your local library may have a list of what groups may be around, or your local community centre. If you like reading and writing, you may want to suss out some of the inner, more creative suburbs like St Kilda or Prahran. In the inner west there is a great community minded suburb called Kensington. Carlton, and especially North Carlton, is a huge favourite of mine. Carlton is a university suburb and North Carlton has a large number of creative professional types. North Fitzroy is good too. Northcote which is kind of near both has an earthy arty feel to it. Anyway, hope that's of some help to you. Feel free to ask more questions and if I can help, I will. |

Its so big, that from the Eastern beaches you can watch the sun setting into the sea, you can't do that with Sydney's harbour! Buzzy |

If you're scared of sharks come to Melbourne....we're in a bay so have neither sharks nor big surf/currents etc - perfect for kiddies. My husband is from Sydney and prefers the life here and that's saying something! |
Re: Melbourne or Sydney !!!!!
Is it really fair to compare Sydney to LA?
Perhaps they have the same "feel" I don't really know, but LA is very, very ugly. Sydney is vastly easier on the eye, imho. |

Sydney has more expensive housing by about 80%+.... Lau x http://www.theage.com.au/news/nation...157560368.html Each to their own but Sydney definitely does it for me over Melb. I love Melb shopping and art and culture but Sydney is just more exciting for me :) Not just the beautiful blue harbour, beaches, national parks, myriad of activities and endless places to explore but we also live in a really gorgeous state which includes the amazing Blue Mountains and Central and South Coasts- so much to offer for short breaks if you feel the need to depart the city. And as far as milder weather is concerned!! be aware that Melb summers can be killers!! Just this summer they had 40degree heat over several days... http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...10/2135731.htm Both cities suffer from heat overloads in the summer, but Sydney's definitely had a mild summer this year. I must say I don't think the humidity makes that much of a difference. I lived in Brisbane for 4 yrs and that was really hot!! Only you will know when you check out both cities, which you prefer, but keep in mind that life would be boring if we all liked the same things- viva la difference and enjoy the trip :) |

But, again, I'm just recounting an opinion formed after only a few hours in LA - and I hate it when people insult my hometown of Adelaide after a short look, so your point is well taken  |
