Re: Melbourne to Sydney
It's actually not a bad drive. The Victorian leg from Melbourne through to just past Albury is all dual carriage way with good roads. There are never that many trucks on the highway that it becomes unmanageable. The bit from Albury to Goulburn is a mixture of two way road, two way road with overtaking lanes and dual carriageway. Not as good as the Victorian roads but really not that bad because if you are stuck behind something slow you wont have to wait too long before you get an overtaking lane. Goulburn to Sydney is all dual carriageway.
Basically it is bloody boring because most of the small towns en route have been bypassed. You bypass all of the Victorian towns and there are only a few NSW ones that you drive through like Holbrook (with its submarine) the rest are bypassed. There are service stations at reasonably regular intervals and it is advisable to make good use of them and get out and walk around. Dont forget the big merino at Macdonalds at Goulburn - kitsch of the first order!
All depending on your prediliction for speeding (or not) the trip is around 10 - 11 hours non stop. Of course, we Canberrans would recommend a stop over in the beautiful national capital which is only just a little way off the main highway (dont miss it, you wont regret it!).
Personally I think it is a waste of a good day - given a choice I would much rather fly!!!!!
