Do you mean the road that runs by Upper Ferntree Gully? Yes that *is* steep, even the car baulked a bit!

I'll take your word for that, never been there myself. Ahem. (Actually that's a lie for dramatic effect, I have been there, lovely cathedral.)
Oh we've bought touristy Melbourne maps on the high street, certainly, but I don't recall seeing one with all the suburbs marked.
No doubt you can better ones at proper map shops like, er, wotsitsname in London. Stanford's, is it?
Myself I've been unable to find proper topographic Melbourne maps. Ones with contours! Helpful for planning cycle rides. Anyone?

Mark, 18 maps for cyclists from VicRoads:

Google also shows much better results if you enter "Melbourne maps" rather than "Melbourne map". Plenty of retailers in the results who will sell maps.

Oh, before anyone mentions it, yes I know about the Bicycle Victoria website. No maps there (except links to vicroads).

statue of lady godiva in the centre. next closest to a horse in the area i worked in would have been a can of dog food

Hmmm, that link seems broken (at the moment). But if you mean the PDFs, then yup, thanks, found those. Actually I find them rather hard to read, or at least to correlate with street/suburb names. Also no contour info.

Try this link;
www.dse.vic.gov.au
select interactive maps then on the new page select the `catchment and watermapper`.
This will provide you with a digital GIS (Geographical Information Systems) map that is used by the Victoria Government and Local Councils. Using the hatch/cursor you are able to zoom in on any area (not just melbourne) within the state. As it is a GIS you can decide to turn off or on certain layers such as roads, rivers etc. For you guys the most useful aspect is the `places` layer which identifies the location of all the surburbs. You can then see which roads connect to them parkland areas etc.
Unfortunately you cant zoom in to distinguish house plots etc, roads are shown but not their names.
Hope its useful.. happy mapping.
cheers
Scott
p.s this is an icon to download to pdf file and print in colour as well!

Hmmm, like so many things it's geared to IE and doesn't work well on Opera (e.g. no layer info or toggles, no rubber-banding feedback). Why don't people *test* things properly? Grrrr... It's still fun but there's no contour info alas (despite its claims); either that or they're too coarse to show up in relatively flat Melbourne.
