medicines, vitamines etc, hand luggage or suitcase?
Might sound a silly question for some but......
I have some extra inhalers for sons asthma and some vitamines etc to take so should these go in suitcase or hand luggage. I suppose extra can go with the household goods. Do i need to declare them all?

Not sure about declaring stuff... but take what you may need in hand luggage, in case your other stuff goes walkies... you don't want him to have an attack while the inhaler is in the case. I always take my pill with me too.
Just realised that I haven't answered your post at all... sorry for the gibberish!
Does anyone know?

I read somewhere, possibly on customs web site, that importing medications was not allowed. I expect that means excluding immediately necessary drugs. Something to do with needing import licence.
If anyone finds more info please post here, as I am interested too, as I would prefer to take a decent supply of medications with me

Declaration Card coming into Aus is about controlled drugs, not basic required standard medication. So take extra hand luggage medicines and if worried go through the red channel and declare, they will reassure you that you are fine.
Six weeks should give you enough time to know your main luggage is not turning up (should not happen), and you can get to a medical centre to get the next course in plenty of time!
relax - you need to go through metal detectors when your childs' hearing aid batteries (three months worth) go off and you are not travelling with the child!!!!

Bring enough in your hand luggage to keep you going, as people have said, and the rest in the hold. The entry card asks if you have ANY drugs with you, so you tick yes, then tell the immigration guy what you have. I did it once with antibiotics, he just grunted and waved me through.
As for bringing anything else, I had a box containing everything from cough mixture, to Beechams Powders, to antihistamines, to 18 months supply of the Pill. Declared them as personal medication on the AQIS form, and AQIS did check the box cos it had some wooden kitchen stuff in it to, but they let the whole lot in.
Last time my mate came out he brought me 4 bottles of a disgusting but effective cough mixture, and 6 packets of Flu Plus pills! All came in with no problem.

Aside from being an Expats addict, I also have squirrel-hoarding tendencies
Can anyone tell me if you can get calpol sachets in Aus? What other non-prescription medications are worth stocking up on?

Hi larrisa...I could't get calpol as it is in the UK but you can get paracetamol elixers for kids with different flavours. I would bring some ...as you may know kids can tell the difference!!!
Sorry...don't know about anything else!

Be careful if you have a bee allergy though...when my husband and I went to Oz on holiday he was carrying an Epipen as he is violently allergic to bee stings. The AQIS guy going through our stuff had a fit when my husband said what it was for. We explained that it had just adrenaline in it, but because my husband would use it if he got stung by a bee, the AQIS chap seemed to think it must contain a bee product....we were there for ages trying to explain the situation. Eventually he let us through with a stern warning not to try and bring it in again
