There are always loads of adverts in Paper for trades people here in Perth, including maintenance fitters, the hard part is actually getting one of them!
For most types of work there are jobs available, some will walk into a job with no problem at all. Some are going to have to work a bit harder to get one, but as this forum has shown with perserverence it can be done.
You may not walk into a job at same level as you are now but may have to take a few steps back, if thats OK for you.
So if you are now a supervisor you may have to get back on the spanners or whatever. More chance of getting foot in the door.
But if you want to stay at current level you can still find work just may take twice as long.
I am in or was in the IT game, and could probably get job doing telephone support without much hassle, but would rather boil my head in tar. been there done it never doing it again. Not even to get a break, so I narrow down my chances.
Personally I think the hardest thing here is if you held a job that you had a particular talent for or really loved, or you were highly respected in your field. To come here and lose that can be very hard. Donna is a Child care social worker, very highly respected, had a very good name and is very good at what she does, has spent 18 plus years earning that respect, coming here she is just another social worker, and although she does not miss the stress I feel she misses the challenge and making the difference. Plus it does seem a waste when its a proffession crying out for decent people.
Sorry to take your thread off track slightly. Just thought I would add some food for thought.

I'm a maintenance fitter at Swindon Pressings. We got our visas in about 25 weeks. So we thought it might be in demand, but when we checked the 'Skills in Demand' list it wasn't on there. There always seem to be plenty of jobs being advertised particularly in Brisbane and Melbourne areas. I have been applying like mad because we leave on 17 January, but most companies are saying to wait to get there.
Have a look at www.gomatilda.com.au they usually have a link to the most recent skills in demand list.

i agree with every thing you say i am a sparkie industrial but cant get a job until i get a licence so i am having to do a job as a non distructive test engineer for BOC something i dont really want to do but it will pay the bills for a while
i used to earn a good wadge in the uk i was a Team Leader for the Maintenance department at Bluewater shopping centre earning over £30k per year now im earining £16000 per year
and its true that there are alot of jobs adverts about but how many that you apply for do you actually get a responce from
when i arrived here i applied for every job that had an advert
and its taken me 5 weeks to get a job and my wife is still looking
coming before xmas was a mistake as alot of jobs are not about until after xmas
xmas temp jobs have already been filled
so as some people my just get a job straight away be prepared to be unemployed for a while
and bring alot of money as you seem to spend it like drinking water and when there isnt any thing coming in every week or month your nice little pot of denero seems to faid quickley away
