i have been here 1 year this month and my 1st 4 months of being here i absolutly loved it. now i absolutly hate it!!

the isolation is what i cant get used to, i feel like im trapped in some prison. also im used to having nights out in the likes of newcastle and middlesbrough, perth is like having a night out in some rural village, and its spread out quite a bit. i know most people on here are past the clubbing stage, but im only 27 and single so its a major factor in my life to go out on the weekend and enjoy myself.

work wise..well im a welder so im earning sh*t loads more money here than i was in the u.k because of the national shortage of skilled workers. mind you tho, im working 10 to 20 hours a week more than i did in the u.k

beaches are nice and so are the people, i cant complain about that. but perth isnt for me. im going to give it 1 more year until my city apartment is built, then move on to some where more lively.

if you like suburbia and a very slow laid back lifestyle then come to perth.

I'm not trying to be a cut and paste, slag off Australia merchant. But things are getting out of hand, the local Perthites I work with all agree too.

I still like it here but under the shiny veneer there is something sinister about Perth, something not quite right. Perth is like a beautiful woman but when you get to know her you realise she's actually a nutter on drugs.

I guess this is my own reality check, my own rose tints in the bin, for good.

I'm taking the house in the UK off the market and giving it another year.

Renth, shit happens everywhere though, not just Perth. I still reckon things are better here than in the UK. There do seem to be a lot of bored youths around looking for trouble, but you'd get the same in UK cities. Are you thinking of going back to the UK then?

I lived in Perth for a year in 2001 and had the time of my life, hence I'm going back. I did visit other cities (Ad, Mel and Syd) and they didn't have the same impact, for me anyway (Everyone is different)

Things I love about Perth are:
Great out doors life style.
Great Summers and the Winters aren't too bad, wet and rainy.
I love sailing - lots of it there.
Still relatively cheep accommodation.

I loved W/A and stayed there for 6 months but after that time i did grow a little tired of the heat, dryness and isolation. I short i found it a little tedious and lacking in things to do once the novelty of beaches and barbies wore off.(and some days it was just too hot ( for me) to do anything. This said however Perth is still my favorite city in the world and it is a beautiful place. I think i may retire/ get a holiday home there in the future

Living in Surburbia may be the problem....

I think once you move into your city apartment, then you will be able to enjoy inner city(urban) living and hence improve your outlook.

Surburbia to me, especially the more recent( up to 15 years old even) ones, have a socio-economic problems which are now manifesting into examples like Ocean Reef has had lately. This stems predominantly from young families moving in en masse to an area and hence all is hunky dory until they( the kids) have grown up and are now bored due to no local facilities suitable for them.Instead they revert to "Hoon behaviour".

Perhaps you should try Melbourne or Sydney before moving back to the UK. Perth is'nt the best place in OZ to live otherwise there would be hundreds of thousands of people from the eastern states moving over there?

With womabt42 for a change, you really should give Sydney or Melbourne a shot (this is coming from a Teesside lass).

I have never been to WA so not even going to try to comment but it has never ever appealled to either hubby or myself. It makes me think of the NSW Central Coast when I hear stories and I never enjoyed living there.

It sounds wonderful for those with families but to remote for us.

Does anyone have any comparable crime figures?

I found on the AusStats website a rate of 'unlawful entry with intent to take property' (i.e burglary??) of 1949 per 100 000 population for WA. This compares with 932 for Victoria and about 1000 for London (from http://www.sustainable-development.g...l/2003/h08.htm)

So in other words WA appears to be - certainly with regards to burglary - about twice as bad as London.

Now I'm aiming for Perth and so I'll be delighted if someone can tell me that I've got the whole thing the wrong way round or dropped some other blooper somewhere.

My Aunt and Uncle have lived in Perth for getting on 25 years and they have never had any bother. For the last 15 years they have lived in Forrestfield and Ellenbrook, my cousins live in Perth centre and they have never had any problems either. Maybe they have just been lucky.
