Based on people's feedback on several threads, I have compiled a list of Sydney's not-so-safe suburbs:
Granville, Bankstown, Lakemba, Liverpool, Cabramatta, Fairfield, Mount Druitt, Blacktown, Auburn, Redfern, Campbelltown, Kings Cross, Wooloomooloo, Penrith, Macquarie Fields, Glenfield, Maroubra, Blackett, Whalan, Emerson, Plumpton, Coogee, Bronte, Bondi, Tamarama, Campsie, Wentworthville, Rooty Hill, St Marys, Parramatta, Greenacre, Punchbowl, Matraville, Lewisham, Glebe, Eastlakes. Anyone wants to add/remove? |

Anyone wants to add/remove? What does 'unsafe' actually mean anyway? I lived in Coogee for a few months and thought it was a terrific place. |

Coogee, Bronte, Bondi, Tamarama?????????
Have you SEEN the price tags there???? Someone is having you on...seriously.... |
Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
Everywhere is unsafe to some degree. I live in one of the more expensive areas and in the last few months we have had the SWAT team raiding a sleepy little cafe via the windows (to arrest a couple of rather nasty men), an ATM blown up, and drunk kids fighting and puking just up the hill almost every weekend.
Successful crims don't live in rough areas, so you can move to Kirribilli and have a gang leader for a neighbour (and I don't mean Kev). Of course some areas are more safe than others, and you have them included in your list but as PPot says, some of those you included are des res areas. They also get rough because they are at the beach and people go, have a good time, drink too much, get leery. If that's why you've included them, put Manly on there too  |

Yeh, they are a rough lot in our local pub. They even queue up one behind the other waiting to get served.

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
I've heard the local mothers' meeting at Darling Point can get quite nasty if there's not enough cooking sherry to go around. Might want to stay clear of that place.

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
Some of them I never experienced problems in and there are lots more I could list. It is a big city so you will have problems in all areas (or not as the case may be)

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
"in Sydney there are also very famous suburbs called Guildford and Hurstville.. famous for being gang and drug ridden places, also Rockdale has high number of robberies"
................ hahahahaha this made me laugh.....famous? LOL famous for what? these suburbs are in NO way famous, i have lived in Sydney for 17 years and nothing bad has ever happened to me, Sydney is one of the worlds safest cities it is also one of the top 10 most livable cities in the world and it is probably the safest larger city in the world. Of course like in any city you should be more careful if you're out at night but there are no suburbs in Sydney apart from Kings Cross and Redfern which are particularly unsafe. Hurstville? What a joke i have been to Hurstville numerous times and live close to Hurstville, it's an extremely safe suburb "famous for being gang and drug ridden places" hahaha thats just ridiculous, there are really no major gangs in Sydney this is not America or the UK, and i have never seen any gang violence or drug dealing in Hurstville. Australia is an extremely safe country, i would feel safe walking outside at any time of day or night in most if not all Sydney suburbs with the exception of Kings Cross and Redfern. Having said this Sydney is an extremely safe city compared to it's size, remember that Sydney is a large city so of course there will be some crime, i would feel much safer in the Northern suburbs then the Western suburbs, but i wouldn't feel extremely unsafe anywhere in Sydney. Most of the violence that happens on the streets of Sydney is on the weekends when people have had a bit too much to drink and get violent. |
Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
I would take Kings Cross off of the list personally. The 2 weeks I stayed there I walked around at all hours of the night by myself without a problem.
As for a desireable place to live I would say no, its kind of dirty, lots of sex shops, street workers, drugies, etc. It definately does have its problems and maybe more so than other areas of Sydney. But depending on what your used to back home I wouldnt consider this a no go zone. |
Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
Hurstville is famous for nothing. Rockdale is infamous for the council being convicted of corruption.

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
You do have to watch your back there but it is always busy 24/7 and you just need to be streetwise. The X also has the shooting gallery which is a place where addicts can shoot up. If they overdose medical help is at hand. Keeps them off the street.

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
I am not very familiar with Sydney, my sis-in-law lives in a suburb (since the past 15 years) called Lindfield (closer to Roseville station though) and it looked pretty safe to me. And I think she mentioned most suburbs close to this one are nice as well.

King's Cross is like going for a walk in Paradise Park compared to some areas of the UK. The only areas I would deem a bit dodgy are some SW suburbs if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time

Anyone wants to add/remove? Certain parts of those areas are definitely not desirable, but I would also say they are pretty safe from an average point of view. Although, I do know some sections of Mount Druitt, Parramatta and St Mary's that I would choose to avoid at night time.

Safe or Non-Desirable ? A much bigger question. |
Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
Everywhere can have problems just depends who lives there at the present time. If we are having a few problems in the street we live or lived in we cannot say that the whole suburb is a problem. Just because the area may have a lower socioeconomic demographic will not make it a bad place to live in my view. Personally I hate plastic suburbs with plastic people, like ordinary with ordinary people.

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
Bondi used to be bad then it was Coogee, then Clovelly got bad....then I moved again, this time to Perth!
Daft question; any suburb of a big city has the potential to be unsafe at certain times. Try walking around Chelsea or even Mayfair in London late on a Friday night! |

Re: List of Sydney's unsafe suburbs
If you believe what you read in the tabloids, western Sydney suburbs such as Fairfield and Auburn are 'unsafe'. I've been out there a lot and never felt threatened. The reality is that there is nowhere in Sydney that is 'safe', especially when there are people on the streets who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Look at the innocent tourists who have been beaten senseless in Coogee and Bondi. I have workmates whose kids have been mugged in relatively affluent north shore suburbs like Lindfield and Killara. Manly is nice during the daytime, but with the pubs at the weekend ... a list of unsafe suburbs is meaningless.
