Default Liquid Smoke

Back in sunny Blighty, I was never more content than creating culinary master-pieces of the meat variety on the old charcoal Weber. Now we're in Oz, in a nice apartment in Broadbeach, Gold Coast, I have had to downsize to the locals preference of a gas barbie
I've tried everything to get the flavour of a proper barbie, but sometimes I just want to whack a quick steak on and not worry about smoke boxes etc, and so I really wanna try the liquid smoke, trouble is I can't find it anywhere. I've looked in the usual Coles n Woolies as well as the IGA but I haven't got a clue which section it'll be in and the staff don't seem to know either.. any clues from other frustrated canivores???

no idea where to get this mate

but what about doing this

1 x biscuit tin
a couple of holes in the lid
half fill with wood shavings and something to support the food say a bit of chicken wire
food on the wire bang it on your barbie and the meat will smoke in the box
without gassing out half the neighbourhood

worth a try or what ???

You can buy proper smoke boxes and chips at BBQs Galore. You have to soak the chips for quite a while so they don't burn but they give a lovely flavour to fish and chicken in particular.

Yep! Me too! I saw the smoke boxes in Bunnings but they were about 12 bucks, more than my steak!!! Good tips though, it does mean I have to eat a whole box of biscuits first though...

My balcony is about the size of a small charcoal barbie! i havent got the space for it, and the gas barbie means i can still cook outside without smoking out the bedroom! Liquid smoke is basically hickory chip smoke passed thru water and concentrated to give you a smoky flavour without using charcoal or wood. It's also good in everyday cooking

I have a recipe that calls for liquid smoke. It's just not the same without it. I was going to get my sister to send me some over since I can't find it in any of the stores either.

I've got a bottle of liquid smoke but for the life of me I can't remember where I bought it from It's fab. I just sniff it every now and then but I probably shouldn't have admitted that

Edit: Whatever shop it was I'm fairly sure it was with the sauces. Whoa!!! brain storm! Just remembered, it was in a really good butchers. If you want I can get a bottle and send it to you. Let me know.

Actually just noticed you're not far. It was in the butchers in the Easy Q Centre at Mermaid Waters, along Burmuda Avenue.

Thanks for all your replies, MoneyPen especially, as I found myself working about 5 mins from Mermaid today and so popped into the butchers and now I'm the very proud owner of a bottle of liquid smoke, thanks!!!
I have tried Wooilies but never found it, I wentinto the one by the butcher MoneyPen recommended just to check and ofund some great 'Zulu' chilli marinade though and as I type I have a load of chicken marinating in smoky killer chilli sauce! You guys are great! And Dorothy, the USAFoods website sells the same stuff, so if you're struggling to find soem, get ordering!

Thanks again,
Sam

I've just been on the USA food site. I can see a trip to Melbourne coming up for me. One empty suitcase on the way there and one very full suitcase on the way home.
