Just a quickie, can anyone tell me if there is a limit on how much cash you take with you when moving to Australia and do you have to delare it at customs

There is a $10k limit I believe, and yes you should definitely declare it at customs.

On the other hand, why not open an Aussie account online and transfer the money in rather than risk carrying large amounts with you?

Thanks for replying so quick, we are going to open an account and transfer money, but a relative asked because we are flying on boxing day and they were talking about giving us some cash as a pressie on Christmas day.(Fingers crossed, may just be talk)

There is no limit.
Under AUD10k - don't need to declare.
Over AUD10k - have to declare.

So long as you can prove its from a legitiate source any amount of cash is acceptable but declarable over the above limits
