Default Life in Adelaide

Hi all,

I have recently applied for a skilled visa and intend to move to Adelaide. I have just had my medicals and Police checks done, so I am now just waiting for an answer from my C/O.

I have been to Adelaide 3 times in the last 3 years and the longest period of stay being 5 weeks. I have done the usual things that people say, such as buy groceries, travel to the city in rush hour etc, but what I really want is the personal views and opinions of other people who have made the move!

I work in manufacturing engineering, with a bias to electrical engineering, so also any views on the economy/job front would be appreciated!

There is work out there - if you can do control work as well that's a bonus

Been here nearly 2 years now - on my second job which I love and has it's own perks and we're shortly moving closer to work buying our first house here. If you have plans on doing any electrical work, you will need to jump through the hoops to get licensed. What occupation are you moving on?

Thats good to hear. My current role is in controls engineering so that is definitely a bonus!

I am moving on Engineering Technologist (233914), assessed by EA. I have been looking at jobs over there and have found a few that fit with my experience.

I have just been reading a few mixed reviews on whether or not to move due to the economic climate in Australia, but I am definitely going to give it ago!

As an engineering technologist I'm not sure if you can get an electrical workers license which might limit options - not sure.

I was under the impression that you could, but I may be wrong! I'll have a look into it. As long as I can get a job somewhere then that will do me!

I did a bit more digging and I think you are correct! However I do have some other qualifications that may allow me to apply for an electrical workers license. I will contact PEER and see what they say.

Adelaide is a lovely city to live in, particularly if you like getting out into the country for relaxation as the Adelaide Hills, Mclaren Vale, Barossa Valley and the Fleurieu Peninsula are all within easy day's outing - and the first 3 are noted wine regions! The city itself is unique in that it is surrounded by parklands which separate the CBD from the surrounding suburbs. I have lived in Adelaide for about half of the 32 years I've been here and would be happy to return there if I wasn't so settled in Brisbane.

Workwise it isn't so great, and with the closure of the Holden factory in a year or two the situation can only get worse - so make sure you have a firm job before committing.
