Default Lecturer job without phd?

I’m hoping to move over to Australia in the next few years and trying to figure out the best way to do so.

At home in London, I’m a barrister (common law) and lecturer (common law and animal law). I have degrees (English literature and law) plus a couple of masters but no phd. I’m not planning on retraining any time soon either.

My niece lives in Australia and I visit her twice a year, have done since her mother passed away several years ago. I’d love to move over in order to be closer to her, help her raise her children and enjoy everything Australia has to offer but I’m worried that I don’t have appealing skills (story of my life!).

I’ve searched online for job opportunities in order to gauge the necessary requirements but the job market is, understandably, very quiet at the moment. I also plan to email a couple of the recruitment agencies for an informal chat but wanted to check here first for some advice.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome to BE. In order to move to Australia as a University Lecturer, you'd need to have a positive skills assessment, as well as meet other criteria. The occupation would need to be on Australia's Skilled Occupation List. Here is the critera for Uni Lecturer published by Vetassess (the assessing organisation for this occupation), more information can be found by following the relevant links on this page:

University Lecturer(ANZSCO Code 242111)

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the education level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor Degree or higher degree and in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

In addition to the above, it is essential for applicants to meet the following employment criteria:
  • at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level,
  • undertaken in the last five years,
  • working 20 hours or more per week, and
  • highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
Please note in order to achieve a successful Skills Assessment Outcome, a positive assessment for both qualifications and employment is required.

I went to graduate school a few years ago, and that university was requiring all their academics to have a PhD, and were getting rid of the ones that didn't or didn't want to get one. It was a bit harsh (I know one of them personally) but it's to do with improving their ranking and getting certification with international standards agencies. I'm not sure if all universities are doing the same

Good luck
