So sorry to hear about holly, hope writing on this thread helps in some way as people have been so nice on here as we all know what it is like to have and love a pet.

My heart goes out to you as I am going through the same thing with my eldest cat, Winston, who was diagnosed with liver disease early this year and is gradually going down hill.
Winston has been with me for 16 years, so I know exactly how you're feeling The thought of losing a beloved pet (and the term pet just doesn't cover what they mean to you, does it?) is so hard to accept, and you just can't imagine how it's going to be not having them in your life.
So have a good cry and let it out - this has been a horrible shock and it will take a couple of days to come to terms with it. The important thing is that you will be there for him, and you'll make the best of whatever time Holly has left and spoil him rotten.
I'm thinking of you,
Nicky

We have a cat aged 5 years called Zola, we gat her 3 years ago for our children, before emigration became a serious issue.
We looked into taking her, but the paperwork and costs were really high!
Our vet said that the move could prove too traumatic for her, as they only water them on flights, no food. Then on arrival you may be in at least 2 different addresses, which to territorial cat is not good! Plus the extreme heat. We weighed up the pros and cons and decided the best thing for Zola was to leave her. Fortunately, a neighbour has said she will take her, so we know who she is with and that she keeps her territory.
I hated the thought of the cost and strain of moving her, to then have her run away or have an encounter with local wildlife that she would not recognise as a threat. Our cat loves playing with and eating spiders!
The girls are really mature about it and have been promised another pet once we are settled!
It's like leaving one of the family behind, but you have their welfare and comfort to think of! Good luck with whichever path you take!

I have had enough interest, just me being picky where she goes, have turned down three people so far as just didnt think they would be right for a still relatively young horse although she is out and actively competeing and doing well.
know exactly what you mean by some dodgy responses though - had any about paying by some sort of cheque payment and asking the mileage?!?! Do they think I have the word "Stupid" stamped on my forehead? duh!
These people over tomorrow look a good prospect - mother wants to get into dressage and her boy wants to do a bit of pony club so sounds a fun and adventureous home. got my fingers and toes crossed! just getting scary now as offer been accepted on the house and its a good chain and the buyers want to be moved in by six weeks :scared: but im still not rushing to sell her as good home for my baby girl is a priority.
anyhoo, I wish you luck finding your girlie a new home, let me know how you get on.

This is the one and only thing that is upsetting me about leaving.
my family dont bother me at all, i can keep in touch with them and to be perfectly honest it will be nice to not have to babysit, loan money, give lifts etc etc etc.....
but i am leaving behind two rats, one cockatiel, three snakes and a very much loved dog who i think knows something is going on cos she just Sh*t all over the kitchen floor which is something she doesnt usually do.
She did it when we came back from hoilday, as well as doing it all over the bedroom floor and chewing my new shoes!!!
I think i am being told off!!!!
I think the rats are going to one of the kids friends, the cockatiel is going to a local birdhouse/wildlife park but i am still hanging on to the snakes and dog for dear life - will have to let them go soon though, just so i can see that they have settled and are happy before we leave.

www.horsequest.co.uk it costs £ 30 for as long as you need and is a well known website in the horsey world
www.jumpoff.co.uk (need to go to the jumpoff horse trader section link) £5 charge until its sold.
www.adtrader.co.uk free advertiseing.
They were relatively cheep to advertise on - there are a lot of free ones like the free ads which I got a lot of responses from and they are also allowing a free photo at the moment so you dont have to pay for any advertisement. but the ones listed above were the main responders. the jumpoff one allowed up to five photo's so got all the nice competition pics in there.
just dont pay any attention to people saying "they will pay by UK cheque" and asking milage and body condition!!! there are a lot of scams going about, but you can spot them a mile off.
I wish you luck in finding your Arab a new home. I got another viewing for Lou tonight and just hope I dont burst into tears again when this lot come over to see her.
Hope the above helps.

From: Brisbane! The best planet in the world!

I'm leaving my cat with my parents at their farm. I've loved him to bits since rescuing him from a stream where he was dumped as a kitten but there's just no way I could submit him to a nightmare flight and a month in quarantine. Don't forget a month to us is a almost a year to them. Anyone who puts their pet through that is selfishly thinking of themselves and not really their pet. If they can be rehomed, they should be, not dragged all the way round the planet.

Sorry but I disagree.
I've done a lot of looking into this and spoken to many, many people who did take their pets and the consensus is they are perfectly fine and well looked after in quarantine.
You are perfectly entitled to your view but please dont tell other people they're being selfish.

Thats is not true.
Leaving your pet in a boarding kennels can be stressful. An animals blood pressure will go sky high if you measured it in the vet and go even higher if it stays in the vet for any length of time.
Animals face stress every day and cope with it in a variety of ways.
Providing a reputable export company is used and the vet is in agreement that the pet is healthy to travel, then there is no reason why the family pet shouldnt be exported.
Rehoming doesnt always work as well as one would think. A new family to get use to can be stressful too.
And a month isnt like a year to a pet, time variations to an animal cannot be proven.
Bearing in mind thousands of cats and dogs are exported every year to be renuinted with owners, and do just fine.
Ive seen cats/dogs go out of the UK and come into the UK and never have I seen one injured or have any detrimental effects to its health.
Alot of people are suffering from leaving their pets behind or the worry of taking them, some pets through ill health cannot travel.
Being called cruel for whatever their judgement, does not help.
Yes you are entitled to your opinion as was previously said.
But animal cruelty comes in many forms. Taking your pet to share your new life is not one of them.
Homing to the wrong person, could be.

Bridie, I so feel for you. I lost a cat a few years ago, to feline leukaemia. Such a cruel thing to watch, nd so hard to judge when enough is enough. But I took some comfort from the fact that, unlike humans, we can help animals when they begin to suffer too much.
I had had my cat from the age of 5 weeks, and because we were both in the forces we took him with us from NI to Germany, and when it came time to move back to NI, did not hesitate. He coped really well with the time in quarantine, came out after 6 months and he was the same happy cat he had always been. They really looked after him while he was there, regular vet check ups and lots of space to play in. We went to visit a couple of times and I phoned at least once a month.
I have two cats now, and have made the very difficult decision not to take them. The oldest is a rescue cat, she does not like strangers, men even more so than women and any change in her routine just stresses her out. She is 9 at the minute, and while she loves me and I love her to bits I don't think I could subject her to that journey. The younger one (by 18 months) is a bit of a scardey cat, she got lost for 6 weeks when we hadn't had her long and now won't go out of the house on her own! So to split them up would be stressful for her.
So they are both going to the mother in laws. She lives on her own, no other pets and her house backs onto fields. I think they will be very happy. It doesn't stop me from wanting to cry evey thime I think about leaving them though.
