I'll probably be getting one from the UK largely because I want the UK keyboard, I must admit! Question of what you're used to I guess.

That did use to cause me a massive problem. I had a UK laptop and an Australian desktop. I ended up plugging an Australian keyboard into my laptop.

I'm used to swapping between the two as the keyboards at work are obviously Aussie.
So silly question maybe, but.......if I was to buy a laptop in Aus, then get a UK keyboard off ebay (like I did when my last one gave up) could it be fitted to the Aussie laptop and configured so that I have all the keys in the UK positions - and retain the £ key?

Yes.

That is what I did. Just plug in an external keyboard and set up the optional keyboard setting via windows, so you can switch between the two at any time.

Control panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages Tab > Details > (add a new language and keyboard)

If you add a new language and keyboard, you can switch back and forth from the language toolbar, between English Australian and English UK.

Thats easy if you're at home, not so good if you are movng it around all the time I just want a UK keyboard on the laptop instead of an Aussie one, so if I get someone to fit a UK keyboard to an Aussie laptop then the settings can be changed and I'll have the £, plus everything else in the UK positions?

A laptop comes with its own keyboard. All for a pound sign? Just type the word p-o-u-n-d ;-) There can't be that many other differences

@ and " for starters. And when I spend a lot of my time communicating with the UK I like the convenience of £. I'm a cranky old sod and I'm not an Aussie and like to be able to type in my own currency, so just humour me

NOOO!!! to the Macbook!

Actually one of the big decding factors is the fact that the cash with whcih to buy the new laptop is in the UK in ££ so unless the exchange rate does a sudden reverse, it'll be a PC WOrld laptop in October

I love my macbook, certainly wouldn't go back to a pc/laptop but I guess everyone has their preferences.

I also got our laptop earlier this year via the UK due to it having a UK keyboard rather than the US layout (which is the version normally used in Australia). I bought it from Dell shortly before my parents were visiting, and they brought it over for me. Cost-wise, it was slightly cheaper (not a huge lot) than buying the same model from Dell in Australia and was delivered 1 week after ordering.

It wasn't only because of the few differences in signs (including pound sign), but also we may move back to the UK at some point in the next 12-18 months.

The only problem with any laptop in aus might be heat. I had a acer which had a decent (at the time) graphics system so I could play a few games. It always ran a bit hot in the front left corner but never used to bother me much.

Until the aus summer came round, then after a few weeks of 35+ the laptop would no longer boot up. I sent it back to acer under manufacturer warranty, it had been bought in the UK originally. It came back 3months later, they wouldnt provide any replacement in the mean time, I had to be constantly calling them every few days just to get it back as fast as I did.
It came back a bit scratched up but worked, at least until the next summer then it died again except this time it was out of warranty. They told me if I wanted it repaired it would be at least $600 for a mainboard plus other parts and labour so it just wasnt worth doing.

I wont buy acer again and might not ever buy a laptop again to use in aus
