Kids and harmful UV rays while at school

It can but it's also associated with poor diet as well which is an unlikely outcome.
Your actually on the right track though because it is related to osteo issues.
That's correct so why is that an issue with children especially prepubescent kids?

Thermoregulation is the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries

Well, for a start, over hot children can fit - erm, this is called something and I know what it is, it's on the tip of my tongue... but nope, it's not quite coming to the forefront of my mind.
LOL! *Anyhooo* heat can also affect other parts of the body - think how heat can affect sperm production (there's a reason those balls jangle around on the outside of your body).
Not to mention possibly dehydration.
Erm, there's a list really.

Your doing great - you get a star

Right, lack of vit. D. can lead to rickets. I think there's also a link to osteoporosis (or however it's spelt) in later life due to Vitamin D aiding calcium absorption. There's also been proposed links with lack of vitamin D to various cancers.

Yes. However, you clearly already know - so why don't you elucidate

OK then lets tackle thermoregulation in kids first.

I need time to 2 finger peck this out so go have a coffee

Kids have an underdeveloped regulatory system.
We all have a little gland in the back of our head that runs like a thermostat and through both nervous system and endocrine (hormones) system triggers certain functions that shunt heat from the core to the outside.
The key here in kids is how heat is shed. Heat is carried by water, released as sweat and the process of evaporation takes the heat away.
Problem with prepubescent kids is that their sweat glands are under developed. In fact their skin has only a fraction of the sweat glands adults have. There's a small advantage over adults though in that they have a higher ratio of body mass to surface area which compensates in a small way but they are probably only about 40 -50% as efficient as adults at controlling core body temperature.

When kids do what all kids like to do like run around then if temps are very hot they can quickly overheat. They need to take regular breaks in cool places to catch up hence hats and shady areas.
In very hot climates or days kids can go into heat stress without doing too much at all.
Oz is a dangerous place in more ways than you can know. I'd advise any parent to obtain and develop a good understanding of heat stress or worse heat stroke in kids - how to prevent it, how to recognise it and how to treat it.
It's a life threatening condition and more so for kids. Kids can die in less than 10 min's and if you get the first aid wrong you can actually kill a heat stressed kid real quick.

Kids who have suffered heat stress are far more vulnerable to heat stress/stroke than kids who haven't. A kid may have been heat stressed and never even know it.
Each heat stress/stroke event causes compounding damage to the thermo regulatory gland. This event changes the thermostatic setting and throws the whole system haywire when it's stressed.
Learn about it and know what to do. Don't rely on teachers, sports coaches to recognise it in your kid because most of these people don't have a clue.
