We bought a car for while my Bloke was over here , and it had one of those stickers in the back window about "a dog is for life....." He gave it a very funny look and said "what on earth does THAT mean?"
I guess a dog is more a part of your life over there - perhaps they don't have the abandoned doggy/cat problem?
