You will struggle to get anything that fast over here at a reasonable price. Telstra are still mostly public and will not upgrade from copper wires to optic cables due to a tiff with the government. 0.5 or 1 Meg are normal speeds here. We use Bigpond (Telstra) - like many big organisations they get criticised for being lumbering giants. But then small local competitors like iinet and westnet have had financial difficulties so there is a small risk they could fold.

We have taken the approach of going with the big boys on everything for starters (Commonwealth Bank etc). While we may not be getting the best deal on anything we should avoid any major cock-ups and you do get savings when you take more than one thing from the same company. Eg get a Telstra home phone, mobile and internet and we could have got 1/2 price internet for 12 months. Our one exception to this policy was Vodafone over Telstra for mobiles and then found they won't work in more remote areas (like down South out of the towns)

Sounds like iinet is for you then.

But go to http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ for all the different options. Telstra are a major rip off with regards to ADSL as there packages have ridiculously small dl limits, some of only 200 megs.

IINET offer ADSL2+ with upto 24meg connection. Broadband plan deals vary on downloads etc...we have the 5gb download limit and phone with ADSL2+ for $75 per month....
We are consistently getting 12meg connections up here in the hills...obviously the closer to a telstra exchange the higher it goes towards 24mg
.

There are still some areas where you can't get ADSL. Sometimes it's hard to find out whether you can or not, as sometimes the exchanges are enabled but you still can't get it. Worth checking carefully.

We have the same although we have a 40Gb cap for $79.99 plus phone. We get about 17Mbps. I can recommend them.

We're in the same boat and the OH has been looking up details at whirlpool. He tells me that he thinks he may set us up with either WildIT or intranode. I used to be with iinet when I lived in Perth before, but that was back before adsl.

The problem we have is that the OH plays online games and I am forever on the net too. We are looking for unlimited (we don't expect to get 100's of gigs, we just don't want to get charged after using up 20gigs online) internet usage as opposed to speed

Just got switched on with iinet today. After looking into a few it seemed like the best option, but only really if you switch your phone line to iinet as well, otherwise you get rubbish download quotas.

Unfortunately it seems that there is no such thing as unlimited quotas here, but you can get a reasonable cap with iinet at "up to" 24mbps for a reasonable price. Once you hit that cap you are "traffic shaped" down to dial-up speeds. Crap, but at least you don't get stung with huge overage bills!

Not true, we are on true unlimited, no shaping or download limits. Only ADSL1 tho as we aren't in an ADSL2+ area but we aren't bothered as it is plenty fast enough for us
