"NECK-LACE"

I asked my aussie girlfriend if I could give her a pearl neck-lace and she just looked at me blankly.

They DO pronounce it strange, then.

Enough of pearl necklaces! There are other forums you can go on if you want to discuss your 'private' life!

My wife is constantly picking me up on the fact I say Opera Winfrey and she says Oh-prah Winfrey.

Or am I just wrong?!!

Paul is always being asked by the lads on the site " did you have a root last night " !!!!
Youse i think is quite cool .
Here are a couple of words that we hear used , mostly from the kids:
Sweet / sick = Cool ( i actually told them off for saying sick , they said mum its cool to say sick , yep people use it )
One that annoys me is righty o , my trainer at the gym says it after every other word .
Joanne and Paul and kids

These australianisms are not at all irritating - they are marvellous. Good god you all sound like my old elocution teacher. Language is oral and colorful and you should enjoy the differences - not get irritated cos they pronounce things differently. Apparently the Aussie raised (questioning) inflection is the biggest influence on young people over here - now that really is annoying.

Elaine?

a mate of mine over here has a theory that the inflection comes from the way Aussies state everything as a question which is all part of the "laid back" thing ie. in a polite situation you don't TELL someone something - you suggest it? :-) an astute aussie told me that most aussies will try and avoid confrontation most of the time? :-) all to do with when your a white man living in a black's man country and you have to adapt to survive - you can't afford not to negotiate etc get on with people.. hear two people negotiating something - even in an office environment and it will be like this. Know what I mean?

badgers "near fatal case of question mark inflection" mount

ps when I say white man living in a black mans country I am not talking about the black fellas - I'm talking about the conditions, heat, not much water etc - this is how my aussie girlfriends dad explained it to me?
