Irritating Australianisms

Just wondering if anyone else finds a few of the pronunciations the Aussies come out with a bit irritating!! Some certainly get under my skin for some reason :)

A couple my wife uses that drive me up the wall....

Yoghurt. Pronounced YOW-GET

Aquatic. Pronounced A-KWOD-IC

Youth hostel. Pronounced YOUTH HOST-ELE

Don't worry...they don't annoy me that much.... ;)

Anyone have any more?

:)

PROJECT

pronounced Proooo -Ject.

the way blokes say

"Riiiighto"....every few seconds as you're telling them something.

Having said that I can think of things that I like about their mannerisms...

Mr J

almost as annoying as when someone says

HOW GOOD IS ....[THAT/THIS]?

HOW ANNOYING IS ....[THIS/THAT]

to mean "I think that is GOOD/ANNOYING"

:)

How about that unique "Australianism" YOUSE...

As in, "youse are going to have a g`day" or "youse better do that" (when they are talking to more than one person)

Necklace is pronounced as two separate words NECK-LACE and they say DARTER for data. This one really annoys me PARSTER for pasta!

Different words for some things you'll need to get used to:

Truck (lorry)
Doona (duvet)
Capsicum (pepper)
Zucchini (courgette)
Lolly (sweets, whatever type)
Chupa-chups (lollipop)
Chips (crisps or chips)
Vacuum cleaner (hoover)
Soccer (football)
Bathers/Speedos (swimming costume/trunks)

PeteY Jun 10th 2003 12:44 am

Ooooh yea i know what you mean about the pasta one. ALthough my father in law (from vic) says pasta as we do, and he reckons its a vic thing to say it correctly :)

A few more.

Sunnies (sun glasses)
Combi van (VW campervan)
Smoko (Ciggie break)

I do like the intonation (rasing intonation at the end of most sentances, not just Q's) thing though.....i find it strangely endearing!
