Is it immoral to eat kangaroo meat?

Is it immoral to eat kangaroo meat? Surely it must be wrong to eat Kangaroo meat. Kangaroos have highly developed emotions and strong family links. Breaking of these strong bonds in the relationships between kangaroos is likely to cause immensly high levels of distress to the kangaroo community?

Let me know what you think?

Kangaroo Meat isn't as readily available for humans as many people think. It is in aussie themed restaurants along with emu but eating my national emblem doesn't get my saliva glands going.

My cat Betty has 'roo' meat every night for dinner.. it is sold mostly for pet food here.

Immoral...............nah......bit tough though !!

bon apetit!

Larissa Oct 3rd 2003 6:42 pm

So Blim, are you thinking it might taste a tad stringy? (due to the distress). Perhaps you could try offering it a lollypop to come to the back of the abertoir with you.
Welshboy... stop worrying about them darn sheep!

i think that you will find that most animals are disressed when they are being killed (years of experience in my youth working in a chicken factory)

i would imagine death to be quite distressing.

PeteY Oct 3rd 2003 8:48 pm

Pigs are social animals too...

I'll eat anything, but i have to admit that the way some animals are treated (chickens in particular) are pretty bad.

Humans are natural meat eaters, we are all designed to be omniverous.

As for roos....

Roos used for meat (either for humans or petfood, or any other use) are i beleive farmed, so the effect on the roo community would be small.

Had roo burgers when i was out there....they were ok, similar to any other burger. Can't beat a nice bit of good quality steak in my opinion. Ostritch is nice too.

PeteY,
you are a man after my own heart (or aftre my Roo.)

I've had a roo steak in North Wales of all places and it tasted ok to me!
I'm sure I've seen it in one of the big supermarkets in the UK just after I had it. I'll have a look tomorrow and let you all know.
(The wife just gave me ever such a bad look as I told her I'd eaten sme roo.:scared:)

basically i think it's clearcut. Scientific research shows that <")))>< do not feel pain. Kangaroos are different you might think this is a laughimg matter but whole kanagoroo comunitees may suffer for generations to come over just one kanagoroo being caught and eaten.

How do we know how emotional they get? You can tell by looking in their eyes. I consider kangaroos are getting sadder each year. I don't know how much more they can take.

We must take action

Let's make a stand with Blim, hands off the Marsupial hoppers,
Can't have W.B.Billy involved though with his sheep worrying,
any sheep let loose with our hopping friends we could end up with a continent full of woolly jumpers:scared: :scared: :D

cresta57 Oct 3rd 2003 10:19 pm

where my folks live they have to shoot the roos on their land or the council come and do it for them and charge them twice once for the cull and once for carting away the carcasses. They also have to shoot the dingo's but have never seen any in the area.

Larissa Oct 3rd 2003 10:21 pm

Yeah! And a tuna wouldn't raise the alarm when you've been hit on the head by a stray branch now, would it?

Sorry Blim but that's not correct. :lecture:
<")))>< may not have evolved a hypothalamus region of their brain to compute what higher animals perceive as pain but they do respond to damaging stimuli / actions or substances. They have elaborate systems of sensory cells around their mouths which have parallels with some mammals. They would notice (?) having a metal hook ripping all that tissue apart.

But to get back to your point....

You are right; roos are having a hard time by our hand.
The best profit / meat comes from the alpha males which endangers the socio- and biological infrastructure of the entire species.

I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but any blood sport makes me sick to my stomach.

Not necessarily they would have to know that their cousine-kangaroo was eaten. We will take him away descritly pretending that he or her is going to better place now. I agree we must respect their feelings evethough we eat them.

Personaly I wouldn`t care to eat damn koala or kiwi bird !

PeteY Oct 3rd 2003 11:24 pm

Somthing i will never get is why people can eat a hunk of cow once its been celophaned up, but they won't touch rabbit, because is cute.

I prefer to shoot rabbit with a rifle less chance of cracking a filling on some shot. I did a Hare stew once and it was peppered with buckshot made it hard work If I hadn't used a full bottle of red to marinade the meat I'd have given up, the gravy was excellent though.:D:D :D

Personally I love a nice kangaroo steak in red wine sauce, but if you want to get really distressed let me tell you that my father's (good ole Southern US boy) favourite meal is squirrel stew. adelaidegirl

roo tails are an aboriginal delicacy,I went to a remote Ozzie town called Fink and the local store had a freezer full of em.
They stick em in the ashes of a fire and chomp away like a big pepparami.

yummy
