Quote from original article "Senator Vanstone encouraged employers to check whether prospective employees are eligible to work in Australia." - like that'll work in the pubs and fruit picking etc as surley then the employer wouldn't be getting cheaper work from people who are outside the system. Makes a change finding out it's not just the UK who 'lose' people once they have arrived LOL

Hmmm. Compared with 570,000 for the UK.

So the UK has only three times our national population, but more than one thousand times the number of illegal immigrants.

We must be doing something right.

Well they get a house and money every week in the UK, with a 2 week holiday stay at San-Gate before they come here. The weekly benefits after 2 years work here is equal to what many earn in a week working in their native country. I can see why they want to come to the UK, too many benefits on offer.

From what I saw some years ago, the employer can be prosecuted for NOT checking the workers eligibility to work legally.

More do get caught than many people realise

(I've know a few companies get raided myself, often from tip offs by other employees)

In 2004-2005, more than 18,300 overstayers and people breaching visa conditions were located by the department. (Not a bad % of the total of 47,800)

The number of visa overstayers in Australia at 30 June 2005 was estimated to be around 47,800, a significant decrease on the estimate of under 51,000 at 30 June 2004 and around 59,800 as at 30 June 2003.
